Full screen video mode does not work in SCORM LMS

Sep 27, 2017

Good afternoon I ask you for help if you can.
I found that when the course with Rise is exported in SCORM 1.2 format and used on an LMS platform, if there are videos, the full screen button does not work, ie clicking does nothing.
The problem was encountered with the following browsers: Internet Explorer version 11 and also Google Chrome.
Can you tell me how to fix this problem?
Thank you
Fabio

Hi Fabio,

I'd be happy to help with troubleshooting - can you answer a few other questions for me:

  • How does the video play using the Share link from Rise?
  • Were you viewing the course in desktop Chrome/IE?
  • What LMS are you using? Have you also tested at SCORM Cloud (it's a free standard for LMS testing - check it out here).
  • What lesson or block type were you using to insert your video?

Thanks!

Dear Ashley,
first of all thanks for the support.
In the course I used a common multimedia block and inserted a common MP4 file.
The video launched by the course in web link mode allows the use of the full screen button, but LMS mode does not work.
I confirm that to run the course from LMS I'm using both IE 11 and Chrome from the desktop with the same problems.
My LMS platform is Oracle's Taleo Learn.
Thank you for the support you can give me.

Hi Fabio!

Thanks for those details! I tested the fullscreen video function in SCORM Cloud, which is a free standard for LMS testing. The function seemed to be working correctly there! Take a Peek here at a screen recording of my test in Chrome and IE.

Could you also test this sample course on your end?  Let me know how it goes!

Hi Alyssa,

I am having the same issue mentioned here. See my answers below:

1- How does the video play using the Share link from Rise?

It plays fine.

2. Were you viewing the course in desktop Chrome/IE?

- Both

3. What LMS are you using? Have you also tested at SCORM Cloud (it's a free standard for LMS testing - check it out here).

LMS is: iLearning Plus - https://www.seertechsolutions.com/. We tested using Scrom 1.2

Yes, I have and it works fine there. So what does that mean?

4. What lesson or block type were you using to insert your video?

Used blocks and labeled graphic.

What do you suggest in this case?

Many thanks for your help.

Ozlem

Thanks for all of those details, Ozlem.  If I understand correctly, the video goes to full screen as expected in SCORM Cloud, but not in your LMS.  Is that right?

If the full screen option works in SCORM Cloud but not in your LMS, that usually indicates that nothing is wrong with the Rise file itself.  The LMS might have some limitation.  Do you have a support team at iLearning Plus that could help?  You can let them know that this function works in other LMS environments and see if they can shed some light on their setup.

Let us know what you think!

Definitely fails in IE on PC. Works in Chrome on Mac and Chrome PC. Other strange behavior includes player controls missing completely from IE. I suspect this is largely due to a security setting locked down on our stations that prevents WOFF loads. I've seen some other odd issues in CSOD (checkmarks missing) in IE. We tend to avoid it.

The results below are testing from this morning using an MP4 embed (direct upload) into Rise. These are with no compatibility set for the LO. My launch settings are: Launch content in Full Window. Launch materials in New Window.

Chrome Mac: Good. Fullscreen works.

Chrome PC: Good. Fullscreen works.

Firefox PC: No good. Fullscreen does not launch.

IE PC: No good. Fullscreen does not launch.

In Firefox, I receive a console error: Request for fullscreen was denied because at least one of the document's containing elements is not an iframe or does not have an "allowfullscreen" attribute.

It appears that Cornerstone's iframe embed for the activity, id="activityFrame" does not have the allowfullscreen attribute. I suspect this is why CSOD and other LMS are prevented from going fullscreen in some browsers. In this case, there might be a way to change from a bubbled event to a direct onclick handler to fix the problem. It shouldn't make a difference but browser security settings are funny.

Hi Karen,

Our team has also been able to recreate this in Review with Rise courses that use a video inserted and attempting to show it full screen. This issue on our end is within Review, as the Review iFrame isn't allowing the video to go full-screen, which is likely what you're also experiencing within your LMS.

We'll keep you posted here once we have more info on this!

Hi Karen,

As far a Articulate Review is concerned the issue exists with both inserted videos and when using an embed link with iframe even if allowfullscreen is used in the iframe code.

By using the Inspect Element option in my browser, Is seems that Review launches the course in an iframe as defined below:

<iframe class="player" src="https://articulateusercontent.com/review/uploads/(*********************************)/index.html" scrolling="no"></iframe>

I've masked the exact URL to protect my course content.

It seems to me that due to this any videos, whether inserted or embedded are not going to allow full screen in some browsers as this iframe is missing the 'allowfullscreen' attributes.

If I compare this to the same course uploaded to ScormCloud with the launch properties set as FrameSet, when launching the course and using the same inspect element option in the browser, it can be seen that every iframe container in the hierarchy is defined with the 'allowfullscreen' attribute, an example is below:

<iframe id="content-frame" name="scormdriver_content" scrolling="no" src="blank.html" onload="updateIframesLoadedCount()" allowfullscreen="" width="100%" height="100%" frameborder="0"></iframe>

Furthermore, if I take the URL https://articulateusercontent.com/review/uploads/(*********************************)/index.html from the iframe that Review seems to use to play the course and paste is directly into  my browser, therefore removing the iframe container from the equation altogether, the course loads perfectly and full screen is available on every video whether inserted or embedded.

Hope this helps, I'm no expert so am quite probably barking up the wrong tree.

Thanks,

Matt

Is there an update on this Ashley?

Have had to resort to using share link for rise and a google doc for feedback as full screen not working in review still. Shame to not be able to utilise review and feedback option for rise video content, the small view is not suitable to review the videos correctly.

Hi everyone!  Just an update that we fixed an issue in Articulate Review where the fullscreen option wasn't being included for embedded videos in Storyline and Rise courses hosted in Review.

You don't have to do a thing, though!  The fix will apply to all of your Review content immediately.  Let us know how it works.  😀
