Quiz will not submit if it is the last lesson?

Nov 23, 2016

I'm looking into Rise, and I love it's simplicity. I'm recreating one of my courses that was originally built into Canvas so that I can compare the learner experience of each.

I had the Rise course set up to end with the last lesson being a Final Quiz. However, no matter what settings I tried or whether I viewed it in Preview or SCORM, I couldn't get the Final Quiz to submit. Everything worked fine until I got to the last question. The Submit button would pop up on the last question after I selected an answer, but it didn't do anything when I clicked it.

I finally got it to work by inserting a "Completion" blocks lesson following the Final Quiz.

Is it not possible for a Quiz lesson type to be the final lesson in a Rise course, or is this a glitch?

Hi Summer,

Thanks for reaching out here, and I'm happy to hear you're finding the set up simple and easy to use!

As for the issue you've run into with submission of your course, I've reached out to our team as it's not an issue I've seen yet. In the meantime, could you share a bit more information with me about the course? What SCORM option did you use when exporting? What LMS are you uploading it too (we generally recommend testing it out at SCORM Cloud as it's an industry standard for LMS behavior)? Did you see this in all browsers/devices while viewing the course or was it one specific set up?

Any additional information you could share would be helpful as we dig into what may be occurring. Thanks!

Summer Howland

My export settings were: SCORM 2004, 3rd Edition, Quiz Results, Pass/Fail.

I originally uploaded it to Canvas, but I just uploaded it to SCORM Cloud and got the same behavior. I also experienced it in the desktop version of Preview while authoring the course. I did not check it in the other devices in Preview.

The only other thing I can think of is that I added and deleted a lot of lessons and section titles as I was learning how to use the tool since this was my first attempt at a Rise course. Maybe I somehow confused it with all of the adding/deleting/reordering?

The order of lessons that was giving me trouble was:

  • Course Overview (blocks)
  • Section 1 (blocks)
  • Section 1 Knowledge Check (quiz)
  • Final Quiz (quiz)

The quiz submission started working when I added Completion (blocks) at the end. I hope that makes sense.

I also just discovered this while troubleshooting. I changed the order to

  • Course Overview (blocks)
  • Section 1 (blocks)
  • Final Quiz (quiz)
  • Section 1 Knowledge Check (quiz)

The Final Quiz submission started working, but the Section 1 Knowledge check submission stopped working. I assume this is because it was at the end now. And again, the quiz submission started working when I added Completion (blocks) at the end of this new order as well.

I did all of this troubleshooting in the Preview mode of Rise.

And one other unrelated issue that I forgot to mention earlier. When I uploaded the SCORM package to Canvas as an assignment, the assignment was automatically named something like "Golf Explained". I assume this is probably left over from your testing phase of the software?

Summer,

Thank you for that thorough explanation and testing! It does sound like it's the final quiz only that causes the behavior and I confirmed with our team that they identified some general issues with the last item and completion, so this will definitely help us dig deeper. As far as using a Block for the final item - hopefully you can use that in the meantime while we continue to investigate!

As for the "golf explained" title - that doesn't ring a bell for me. Presumably your courses are not about golf? ;) The course that you saw included automatically within Rise was the "Employee Health and Wellness" course, correct? Within SCORM Cloud did you see the same title when uploading? Could there be a previous course within your Canvas environment that was connected to the Golf Explained? I'll certainly have my team look into that one too - but that's certainly got me stumped!

Hey Summer - thanks for your wonderful compliments of Rise. And the details you've provided us so far.

We're having trouble reproducing your main issue. We have no trouble submitting a quiz, even when it's the last lesson.

Would you be able to share the course with us so we an take a look?

Also, the "Golf" metadata that's in the SCORM export is a known issue and we'll have that fixed shortly.

Is this 100% fixed in the latest version of Rise?

I am experiencing the same issue of the scores not submitting when the quiz is the last lesson in the course. I have noticed that any additional interaction (clicking the "take again" button) after the quiz will submit the score however, like described by previous users.

  • Testing in Docebo

Also, I am continuously seeing the "Take again" language at the start of the quiz even though I haven't taken the quiz before. When I preview the course in Rise it shows correctly though.

Hey Joe -

Thanks for sharing all those specifics with us here. I know our team is digging into this right now to see what may be happening but it would be especially helpful if we could get a look at your exported SCORM package.  You can share it with me here using the "Add Attachment" button at the bottom of the Reply window or send along to our Support Engineers by uploading it using this form.  Either way we'll be able to get that into the hands of our team ASAP.

Just incase anyone else stumbles onto this discussion with the same issue as myself, the answer I received from support was..."Unfortunately, I was unable to find a workaround. I can't offer a time frame for when or if this issue will be fixed, but I'll let you know if Quality Assurance finds a workaround for it in the meantime"

If I here back anything new I will update this discussion.

In the meantime, I am adding an additional lesson at the end of the course and if the learner navigates to it after finishing the quiz it will submit the lesson's score.

This is very confusing from a user experience perspective though.

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Thanks Joe for sharing here and I did talk with Karla about this yesterday. We've got a report filed with our team and your file in their hands so hopefully we'll have an update for you soon.

For your workaround, you could use that final "lesson" to say something simple like "You've completed the course and you can now safely close the browser window to process the course results."  I've seen others in the forums use that just as a reminder for their users.

The problem is when a learner fails a quiz, hits retry and believes they completed the quiz. Or when someone passes the quiz and the result represent they did but no score is submitted. The results are not submitted unless they interact with an object like hit retry or move to this unnecessary completion page we had to create. They also need to come back to that completion page if they fail, then retry, then have to move forward to the last lesson page even thought they have already viewed it.

This is not a feature request, it is a bug in the software. We are still awaiting an answer since all of our courses rely on having a quiz at the end. A call is not made to the LMS even after the final quiz question is answered and a score visually represented. This is leaving a lot of people confused. This has also been tested in several different LMS environments with the same result.

Ashely / Adam - Happy to report the fix worked! Thank you very much for the speedy turnaround on this!

The only issue I am still having is that when you go through a course for the first time and reach the quiz at the end, the button still says "Take again" instead of the "Start quiz". When you preview the course inside of the Rise platform it works properly but after export it always says "Take again" for the quiz button. Any ideas?

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

So great to hear Joe, and thank you for letting us know!

For the "Take Again" message you're seeing, this is the brand new export you've got? Do you only see that in this particular file or any others you've created in Rise? We may need to investigate this as a separate issue if it wasn't resolved with the other fix. Can you share a copy of that export with us - and if you need to send along privately or it's too larger for uploading in the forums you can upload it here.  Let me know if you get it upload to our team using that form so I can follow along.

Curricula Tannahill

Has there been a recent update? The issue seems to have returned again.

Courses are not submitting the final score or completion status when finishing the quiz as it is the last lesson in the course. Could someone please look into the issue ASAP?
