tracking completion of task in course

Oct 18, 2018

When I build a course in Rise and use interactive features like flash cards or accordion lists or knowledge checks, does the system take into account whether they "clicked" on everything when determining completion. I'm trying to determine how much of the content they actually looked at.

Some examples:

  • As a knowledge check I have some flashcards with a question on one side and the answer on the other. Does completion include clicking on each flash card or can they get to that section and not click on any or all flash cards and it counts it as completed because they got to that section and kept going?
  • I've used the accordion and tabs for definitions I want them to read. Does completion include clicking on each tab or opening each accordion or is it just they got to that section and kept going?

Thanks

Hi Rosemary,

As a learner navigates through the course, the progress/completion bar at the top (or the circles in the sidebar) will recognize it as complete once a user has scrolled to that section. They don't have to click on all the items to be considered complete.

If you want to make sure they're interacting with all the items, look at adding in a Continue block. You can use continue blocks to require learners to complete checkbox lists, audio blocks, video blocks, accordions, tabs, labeled graphics, processes, sorting activities, flashcards, knowledge checks, and Storyline blocks. (Although button blocks are interactive, you can’t require learners to complete them.) For more details, check out this section of the navigation tutorial.

That’s great. Thanks
I already had Continue buttons but I didn’t know there were different options connected to it.
I changed the one at the end to say “Complete all blocks above” and I thought it would make them complete each interactivity in all previous sections. It’s still letting me go by things in earlier lessons. Am I misunderstanding the intent of that?
Thanks

Hi Rosemary,

The Continue button will function on a per-lesson basis - so for example, this shows you multiple lessons:

Once inside a lesson, you'll see the individual components of each and that's what the Continue button is basing the completion on:

Let me know if that makes sense, or if you're running into any trouble.

Can I ask you another question that may or may not be related to this.

When I launch a RISE course in my LMS that just has that 1 item in it, the LMS is not recognizing they have completed it until they close the course. On courses with multiple components, like a presentation and a quiz it works ok and the student can tell they finished everything without closing the course. The LMS vendor is saying I need to build a "close" button within the course content. Is there such a thing? I've poked around and can't find anything that looks like that.

Thanks

Another question on this. Previously I created courses in PPT and loaded it to the LMS using ISPRING. When I took that approach I never had to build an Exit button and the program communicated with the LMS and passed on when they completed the course. I've talked to our LMS vendor because it seems that student should not have to click an exit button. When the Articulate panel says they are 100% complete that information should pass to the LMS. They said that I would need to talk to the folks at Articulate because their program should be passing that to the LMS. Having to click an Exit button is an extra step for the student and it's confusing because they think they are done but there are other items in the course that are built directly into the LMS that they need to complete. Is there anyway to get Articulate to talk to the LMS and pass this information? Thanks

Hi there, Rosemary! Happy to help. The Exit Course link is an option to offer learners, but it's not a requirement to communicate completion. A course communicates completion when learners have either visited the required percentage of content, have completed a quiz, or have triggered completion in a Storyline block.

From your previous post, it sounds like smaller courses are not communicating completion to the LMS even though they show 100%. We are happy to help with troubleshooting, like enabling debug mode to see the communication from the course to the LMS. If you need a hand, let us know and reference this discussion so my team can get the full picture.
