Next & Previous Buttons in Player following project order rather than user order

Hello all. I've recently noticed that when my user is using the menu navigation & the next and previous buttons, the two don't align.

Here's the situation: my user was overzealous and jumped from slide three to slide nine, then realized they needed to review the material and tried to click "<PREV" to go to slide eight. The "<PREV" button jumped them back to slide three, which was the previously viewed slide, not the previous slide in the menu.

I've triple-checked and this happens in Review & Storyline. I've also confirmed that the menu and slide orders are correct. It's not only happening with these two slides but anytime a user clicks further down the menu and tries to go to the previous slide via the button.

Is this a system issue or should I disable "free" navigation through the menu?

Thanks for your time!

  • Hi SabrinaWilder-5!

    Happy to help with this!

The behavior your learner experienced is expected in Storyline 360. The Jump to Previous Trigger in Storyline correlates to the previously viewed slide. Similar to a Back button on a web browser. If you'd like the Previous button to always follow the linear path of your slides, the Previous button Trigger must be modified on the slide level. This means changing "previous slide" to a specific slide number as shown below:

Please keep in mind, if you add, delete, or rearrange slides, the corresponding Triggers would need to be adjusted. However, we are tracking a feature request in Storyline, allowing for authors to set the logic for the Previous slide Triggers. I'll include your voice in the request!

Also, if you find your learners are skipping ahead too often, you may want to explore restricting, or locking the navigation.

Please let me know if you have any more questions!
