Show certain layer when launching lightbox

Sep 09, 2013

I would really like to be able to allow learners to click on a word/term in text, and automatically open the glossary with that term displaying.  I cannot figure out how to do this with the built in glossary (plus I don't like the look and feel of it), so I created my own glossary lightbox slide.

The lightbox slide has a dozen layers (one for each term), and I would love to open the glossary with the proper layer showing.  Is this possible??  (kind of a trigger that combines the Lightbox Slide & Show Layer in one.)

Any help would be much appreciated!

It could work if you:

  1. Set a variable to some value for the target layer before:
  2. The trigger that lightboxes the glossary, and:
  3. Conditional triggers (one for each layer) on the lightboxed slide base layer, i.e., show layer x when timeline starts (this slide), with conditions:

          a) List: Window / If: This slide is lightboxed, and
          b) Variables: yourVariable == Equal to Value x

That way, you could lightbox the glossary for a specific term, but also link to it regular-sized for casual glossary browsing.

Hope that helps!

Hi All,

I am researching something very similar and came across this post.  I use a  slide for a list of questions that will be answered as the learner progresses through the modules.  I always bring this slide up in a lightbox.  Right now the lightbox is activated twice.  the first is the base layer and the second time is at the end of the module to show each question answered with a check mark.  this is the second layer.  I set a number variable on that layer and numbered it 1.  I added the trigger on the lightbox slide as suggested In the post. From the slide where the lightbox will be called the second time, I added the trigger with the condition that the variable is equal to 1.  That seems to work fine, however, now when I call the lightbox slide at the beginning of the module, it shows the second layer...what am I doing wrong?

Thanks so much. I already posted this as a new discussion for the reasons
you indicated. I hope to get a response, but if not will try to contact
directly and upload an example.

That's fantastic! I used it to link terms in my training to Jeff's Multimedia glossary and it worked so well. https://community.articulate.com/download/storyline-2-multimedia-glossary. With this glossary all of the definitions are on slide layers, so that there are only 26 slides (one for each letter of the alphabet).

Thank you so much!

For those interested in a step-by-step recap of what I did...

After adding my terms to the glossary I:

  1. Made the terms blue and underlined in the training so they looked like hyperlinks
  2. Put a hotspot over the term
  3. Created a Text variable named Glossary
  4. On the slide where the term was located I created 2 triggers for the hotspot: The first adjusted the Glossary variable so that it matched the name of the term (you can type in whatever you want, but it's good to use something close to the term because it'll make it easier to keep track of in your trigger panel. When possible I shortened it, see below for example). The second trigger lightboxed the glossary slide where the term was located.
    • Example: For the term "United States of America", I used "US". So the trigger would read Set Glossary = US. I then lightboxed the glossary slide named "U".
  5. On the Glossary slide, I created a trigger to show the layer with the appropriate definition with the conditions a) the slide was lightboxed (this can be found by selecting "window" in the trigger wizard), and b) the Glossary variable equaled the term name I assigned it.
    • Example: For the term "United States of America", I set the trigger on the glossary slide named U to show the layer named "US". The variable condition then read "if variable Glossary = value US." I did not use quotes around term. It is important, though, to make sure you use the exact same term in both locations.

It worked beautifully. The only thing to keep in mind is that lightboxing the layers will make them smaller so it's important to make sure the definitions still look readable when lightboxed.
