Skin Player Pause Button to Work with Audio on Layers

May 09, 2013

Hi Everyone,

I am working on a course and am using the skin player with the play/pause button.   However, when a learner clicks to pause, the button is not pausing audio that is playing from layers.

So let's say I have an image on the screen that the learner has to click.  When they click it, it will show a layer and within that layer I have included the audio file.

Is there a way to get the pause button to pause that audio?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Janelle,

I apologize, but I'm a little confused. When you say you're using the "skin player", do you mean the built-in seekbar in Storyline? Or are you using some type of custom skin?

It sounds like you're referring to the built-in seekbar in Storyline. If that's the case, the audio from your layer will need to be tied to the timeline, in order for the player buttons to function when seeking or pausing/stopping.

Are you enabling the "seeking" option on the layer?

Can you share a little more information and clarification on this, please?

Thanks!

Hi Janelle,

Thanks for confirming that, I appreciate it :)

The easiest way to do this would be to enable the seekbar on the main layer and then enable the option on your audio layer to pause the main layer's timeline. This way, when the audio starts playing the user will be able to control the audio with the play/pause button and they'll be able to "seek" though the layer's timeline.

To do this, click on the cogwheel in the "Slide Layers" pane. Then, enable the option for "Pause timeline of base layer".

Now, for this to work the audio needs to be on the timeline of the layer itself. You can tell if it's tied to the timeline by how it displays in the timeline:

If the audio file looks like a "wave" graphic in the timeline, it's going to start when the timeline starts, so it's "tied" to the timeline. The bottom line in the image above is what you'll see.

If the audio is triggered, you'll see a small volume icon and the file name of the audio. This means that there's a trigger somewhere on that layer set to play that audio file.

Try this out and let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks, Janelle! :)
