Slide numbers in footers

Jul 01, 2011

This seems like a real simple issue, but I have the course name and slide number in the footer on the master pages and they display until I publish...then the title displays but not the slide number. Any idea what's happening?? I'm using Articulate '09, PPT 2010 and Windows 7. The space where the page number should appear is on screen, i.e., I don't think it's that the page number is off the edge of the screen....

Ok, so I feel a little less dumb....seems counter-intuitive to have to do that in addition to master pages. But, even, so, I just went to the INSERT menu and chose SLIDE NUMBER and FOOTER and clicked APPLY TO ALL and I still don't have the slide number when I publish...DO have the course title. When I go back to INSERT, those items are not checked....but I don't see an OK choice or anything other than the APPLY choices....what am I missing???

Just tried it....

  1. added two pages...looked at master and they have footer and slide number....published, no footer and page number
  2. went to INSERT/HEADER FOOTER and checked slide number and added a footer...published and they're there. Didn't have to to INSERT/SLIDE NUMBER...when I looked there, they were already chosen per my choices in INSERT/HEADER FOOTER . And when I choose either one of the INSERTS, my choices are still there. But in my course file, I can make choices and they don't stick??? I got the template from the client and their original template won't show slide numbers either.

Any ideas?

I've been trying to copy slides into a new file....interesting.... I can get the new file to display slide numbers...UNTIL I copy in the client's master page...then the numbers are gone when published. Not sure what's going on here but I have to continue to experiment a bit. If you have any ideas/articles on easy ways to get a copy of slides into a new file other than SAVE AS, please let me know.  Thanks for your help!! Have a good 4th!!

Good idea, so I tried that just now....I copied the symbol from the slide number object in the master page and it does appear when I publish...the symbol, not the slide number?!!?!?  Isn't there a hot key to add the slide number or am I thinking of some other program? Here's what your online documentation says, so copying won't work...

General    Slide number does not display

Presenter ’09 will publish your slide number only if the following is true:

  • You are using the default slide number folio that is included in your slide master.
  • In Header and Footer, Slide number must be selected.

If you copy and paste a folio symbol into a slide master or on a slide, the slide number will not appear in your published output

Of course, part of my problem is that the INSERT choices don't stick....not encouraging....

I just went out and downloaded another copy of the template to be sure I hadn't done anything to it....same issue, so it did come with their template.

Anyway, I really appreciate your help,  Ron, I don't think it's your problem here! Again, if you come up with any other ideas, I'd love to hear them, but now I'll have to work with the  client to see what we can do. Interesting thing is that we are in beta review and no one but me and the internal training guy have noticed the missing slide numbers??

Hi Carrie - there are a couple of other options that you can use to get your slide numbers to display in Articulate if you can't get this to work.

1. There is a setting in the Player Template - (select the Other) - that allows you to Display the slide numbers in the navigation tabs. The numbers will display in front of your slide titles in the Menu.

2. The other option is to turn on the Seekbar - it displays the page number you are on.

The only issue with both these options is that Articulate does not display page numbers for any slides you have marked as hidden in the Articulate Slide Properties.

Thanks, Nancy. Yes, there are several places I can get the slide number to display....just not exactly where the client would like on their template unless I place it on each page. I'm checking with them today and expect on each slide is what we'll do for this specific project until we can get their template fixed. Thanks for the input!

I tried that at the time...you couldn't find a solution either. There was something going on in the template file that I started with from the client. We tried copying the content into a new file and a number of other things to no avail. I had so much time into that course that I decided, with the client's agreement, that it was best to simply type the numbers onto each slide.

I believe I have found a solution for this (I had the same problem, working with a legacy PowerPoint file).

In PowerPoint 2010, go to View -> Slide Master.

Click on the PowerPoint SlideMaster slide you want to enable page numbers on (the top level slide).  On the Slide Master ribbon, you should now be able to click on the "Master Layout" button.  Check "Slide Number".

NOTE:  I had to manually delete the existing slide number and modify the color and size of the slide number it created to make it more visible.

I also then had to manually copy this text box to the individual slide master layouts for the layouts I was using in my presentation.

Now you can go back to Slide view, and go to Insert -> Header Footer button and choose slide number, apply or apply to all.  The option will now save and show up when you publish using Articulate.

I believe the problem we had before was that it wasn't enabled in the Slide Master, so the reason PowerPoint wasn't saving the option in Header Footer was because it didn't exist.
