Click anywhere in the Scenes pane, hold down the CTRL key, and roll your mouse's scroll wheel up/down to zoom in/out.

You can adjust the size of the thumbnails a couple of different ways. This article has a section on zooming in and out.

The story view layout is based on the slide triggers as you'll see the little arrows connecting the slide to the next slide. If you've set up triggers for custom next buttons on a slide master, there won't be a way to showcase the slides in a vertical view as they're not "connected" using normal slide triggers. Here is more information on how the story view set up works. 

I don't see the point of this. There is already a dedicated storyview. Why repeat it in the left Scene pane? This should be dedicated for editing the entire project, and should allow you to flick down through all the slides in order ala Captivate/PowerPoint etc.

You can collapse that slide panel on the left hand side if you'd like, just by dragging the bar to the left.

I'm not familiar with the feature you mention from Captivate/Powerpoint, but if it would make life easier, I think it would be worth telling our product team about it here!

How about locking the zoom size in that Scenes panel? Can we do that? Like someone pointed out in a different thread, SL360 resizes that view again after I switch between slides, making me zoom repetitively.

There isn't a lock option, but that also sounds like an idea worth sharing with our Product team here, or if you'd like to share any more details here in ELH I'm happy to pass it along too.
