Track Completion without an LMS

Feb 14, 2013

I have a lot of clients who want to track completion, but they're not ready to commit to an LMS. Here's a simple solution I've come up with that does not include any need for javascript or php, and would work in both Storyline or Studio. Hope it helps you out!

The form builder I used in this example is at www.jotform.com. You could also use the free forms on either Google Docs or Adobe FormsCentral.

Hi Christina,

However I am not sure how this can replace the need to have an LMS. Most companies wants to track result of an assessment, quiz etc. i.e scores they have obtained. Just because you have reached at the end of last page of a e-learning course does not mean that they have learned the subject.

In any case its great tip and thanks for sharing

Cheers

Hi Ganesh,

Great point. This option of course does not fully replace an LMS and all of the features and reporting one would offer, and even then, neither this option nor an LMS would provide feedback on whether the learner can actually apply what they've learned. However, for clients who simply want to know whether the course was completed (ie, they got to the end), without any reporting on quizzes, this is one option that you may offer. I simply wanted to share it because I've had much trouble with clients wanting certificates of completion, yet the ability to print a screen or email a screen is not consistently available across all platforms (flash, html AND iOS).

Thanks,

Christina

I'm one of those who does not have the budget for an LMS account. I just set up a JotForm account and created my first form. It works great! Up to this point I had little actual feedback on who was completing the course. This is no guarantee however, that everyone finishing the course will fill it out. I haven't figured out how to actually create a situation where I can make the form mandatory, since the web object is independent of the player controls. Thanks for the great screenr.

Hi,

Thanks for a great tip!

However I struggle to get rid of the scroll bar which shows up, even though the content is much smaller than the web object. Does anyone know to fix this?

There is also a border around the whole web object which I don't want. I solved this with a white border and brought it to front (over the web object). However, when I try to do the same with the scroll bars, the web object just bring itself to "front" when hoovering over it.

I hope all this makes sense and that you can help.

Thank you!

Christina,

This is a great suggestion. I won't be implementing an LMS until the end of the year. This will be an excellent temporary solution, especially since I can import it later into my LMS as historical data.

Do you have any suggestions for easy ways to track instructor training? Right now, I am using an HRIS and have to manually update every learner's status. It is extremely tedious because I can't give the instructors the ability to update their status.

Christina and all,

This is a great solution and I really appreciate that Christina has taken the time to document and share it. It will *almost* work for my situation, but I have a small glitch I am hoping somebody might be able to help me work out.

I have a course that requires learners to pass an assessment at the end and print a custom certificate with their name/company name. I'm using Storyline's "enter your name" functionality along with tweaking the report.html file to do this. They have to then take that printed certificate with them to renew their business license. That works great, however, the client (business license office) would like a non-manual way  to track the names of those who have completed the course - basically to capture the name/company name that the leaner enters.

Asking the learner to Email a copy of the certificate is not an option - problematic for this non-technical audience.

Since I'm already asking them to enter their name/company name to be printed on the certificate, and that's all looped in with the quiz results programming, I don't think I can use this web object solution to ask them to enter it a second time so it gets sent to the webform. Is there a magical bit of code I can add to that "OK" button when they enter their name, so that data gets sent to my client??

Thanks!

Karen
