Track user text entry data

Jun 20, 2012

Hello,

In the current course that I am builing, there are slides where the user must enter data. For this I have used the 'data entry' option. I also want the data to be saved to the LMS. Please could you assist me with what trigger I must use on the button for the text entry data to get saved in the LMS, or is there another work around?

Please assist! Need to figure this out as soon as possible!

Thanks in advance!

Hi Neha, it sounds like you are using Storyline? If so, you would want to use the Convert To Freeform option to turn the slide into a trackable question. Then insert a result slide in your course so that you can report on the results of that question (and any others in the course that you want to track). Then, when you're ready to publish for LMS, use the Tracking option on the Publish window to choose the result slide you created.

Hi Jeanette, thanks for the help. Yes, I am referring to Articulate Storyline.

I still have a following queries:

1. When we use convert to freeform for text entry, we are forced to provide options as the correct answers. But what if we dont want to provide any correct answers and just want the user to be able to enter text which should be saved? Is the essay question from the quizzing template an option?

2. Also, is result slide a must? Coz, the essay type questions may not need results.

Hope these make questions make sense.

Hi again Neha,

  1. If you don't want to designate a specific answer as "correct" on your Freeform Text Entry slide, you can turn off the scoring, which will make the question a non-scored survey-type question. To do that, go to your freeform slide and click "Edit Text Entry Interaction" (it's right above the Triggers panel). When the question editor appears, you can use the Score selector to choose "None." You might also want to change the Feedback selector to "None," if you don't need to display any feedback after the learner enters their text.
  2. Yes, a result slide is a must in order for the learner's text entry to be reported to your LMS. However, you can make the result slide look like a plain slide if you want. When you insert the result slide, you can choose the "Blank Result Slide" option as shown below, and on the Options screen, you can turn off all the typical result slide options. This way you can design the slide to look however you want, and learners never need to know that it's a result slide at all.

No problem Neha - by default, a Result Slide won't show up in the menu, but it's very easy to add it:

  1. Click Home>Player>Menu.
  2. Select the slide title which represents the slide before where you want the result slide to show up in the list. (In your case, it'll probably be the final question slide in your quiz.)
  3. Then click the yellow folder icon at the bottom of the window, select the result slide, and click Insert.

This will add the slide to your menu list.

Sorry Jeanette, I tried the above solution and the result slide reflects in the menu in the player properties window. But when I publish, preview or go back to the player properties, the topic (result slide) does not reflect in the TOC. I have tried this multiple times and even saved the player with a different name. None of it works!

What could be the reason for this? Is there a workaround?

Hi Neha - great catch, and thanks for bringing that to our attention. You're right, the Player Properties manager  appears to allow you to add the result slide to the menu, but it doesn't "stick." I'll share that info with our development team. In the meantime, here's a workaround that I think will help you achieve the effect you're looking for:

I've attached the file in case that's helpful.

Hey Jeanette, thanks for the workaround! I was working on similar lines and could not figure out why I wasn't being able to go back using the Back button.

I have just one more query (thanks for being so patient!) - When we add triggers, can't we add triggers for the Back button the way we do for the Next button? Something like the branching in Articulate Studio, where we can branch for previous and next slides?

Jeanette Brooks

That's a great question, Neha, and you're not alone in wanting that functionality. Right now, there isn't a way to apply a trigger to the Previous button like you can for the Next button. I invite you to add your voice here if that's something that you would find valuable. It would make a great enhancement and may be something that gets included in a future release. In the meantime, what most folks do if they need more flexibility is create their own Previous button on the slide itself, since then you can apply whatever trigger you like.

Hi Jeanette,

I'm trying to do something similar, but I'm using the template for a Short Answer. But I can't change score selector to 'none'. Why is that, do you think?
