Update 8 - How Do I Get It?

My question is back to the root of Liz's question. Why is this update not showing on the Check for Updates in Presenter? i don't think I should have to check the support page or search the forums everyday just to make sure that there is a new version. Or at least put it in big red letters on the home page that there is an updated version. (see "Crunchy Frog" - M. Python)

Hi Dwayne,

Valid question.  We normally only turn on the check for updates feature in Articulate Studio '09 when we think the update is big enough that EVERYONE should get it, and don't turn it on for smaller updates like the one that we just pushed out that impacted a smaller number of people.  So we normally turn on the check for updates when the number of people impacted is high, and the issues fixed are fairly serious.

The reason we do this is that we (along with others) find it a tad annoying when software is constantly prompting to update (Acrobat Reader comes to mind) when the updates are relatively minor.

We might revisit how we do updates in the future to balance the updates a bit better, but for now, if you need this update you can get it via the link above.

The download is 88 MB -- don't see how that could be labeled a "small" update. Any place that lists the changes?

edit: -- I see the changes sorting through the posts suggested above.

This release information dribbling out strategy does instill confidence that the whole thing is under control at the Articulate end.

Hi - I understand the explanation - thanks for providing the answer after Dwayne asked.

My feedback on this is that Articulate don't publish updates so frequently that advising us of them all via the check for updates link from within Articualte, would annoy anyone. Certainly not me.  

One premium WordPress plugin that I use on all my sites updates on average 3 - 4 times PER DAY.  Now that's annoying. (But on the other hand, the developer of that plugin is well known for responding to what his customers want, so annoying as it is, we put up with it as we know he cares to give us the functionality asap).

I'd love Articulate to provide more of the things we want, faster and in smaller chunks. Even if it is annoying.

Thanks for the feedback, Liz. The challenge with pushing out updates that don't affect most users is that we have a number of customers - especially those in, say, really big companies - for whom updating software on many user machines is not a trivial task. It's easy for you or me to update on our own computers, but not everyone has the luxury (or even user permissions) to be able to update software on a whim. So we try to find a balance.

Thank you for your reply.  I suppose if the really big companies are your bread and butter then you can't do much about it. As web designers we had to keep coding for IE 6 thanks to very large companies, well beyond the itme when we should have been coding for IE 6.

I hope you are starting to think about the smaller business. I would really like to use AO but the pricing structure is too restrictive for us, for example. 

Well, we have a really wide variety of customers - both big and small from all different industries - which was really the point I was trying to make... not that we make decisions based around only what big companies need - it's about finding a good balance.

Thanks for the feedback on the AO pricing, too. I think you'll find that it's actually quite a bit more affordable than LMSes that target the enterprise customer.

I supposedly installed Update 8. Is there any way, through Articulate, that I can tell that it was successfully installed?

You can check the version number by going into PowerPoint, clicking on the Articulate menu, choosing Help and Support, and then clicking on "About Articulate Presenter."

Help... I just loaded the Articulate 9.0 update 8 (was previously at update 4) - and when I try to enter my license key for Presenter - it tells me it's an invalid license key??

Plus, I noticed that rather than replacing my version (Articualte 9.0 update 4), it created a whole new folder.  Engage, Quizmaker, and Video Encoder all accepted the license keys I entered.

I do have a case submitted, it's just that I'm being impatient

Did you disconnect the computer from the internet when you attempted a manual activation as noted in the article? That should work.

I'm not sure whether or not I installed Update 8  (I remember I didn't want to change anything while in the middle of a large project...)

"About..." tells me that I have V6.3.1103.112 Pro?  Is there some magic way to interpret this in English?
