Video & Objects out of sync

Nov 24, 2013

Hi everyone,

I initially posted the messages below as questions, and have not had any replies. Here they are again as discussions, hope someone will be able to shed some light on the issue I seem to be running into.

POST 1:

Hi there,

I'm running into an interesting problem with the course I'm working on.

I added a few callouts/shapes to the video (screen capture), to highlight parts of the screen. I linked the shapes to cue points on the timeline. When the video is played without interruption, everything in synced and displays at the predetermined times.  The moment the video is paused, however, the objects get out of sync. It seems as if there was a separate timeline for the objects and the video.

I uploaded the module to Tempshare > How To Navigate This Course (slide 2) is the slide in question.

What could be the problem?

POST 2:

I've just discovered something interesting.

I added an arrow pointing to the video control, and set it to appear for a duration of 10 seconds. I made an assumption that the 10 seconds started when the video commenced.  Not so. The 10 seconds start when the slide is accessed. The arrow disappears after 10 seconds, regardless whether the video plays or not. This leads me to believe that there are multiple timelines: the slide timeline and the video timeline. So if the slide timeline starts at the beginning, and if the learner doesn't press the play button immediately after accessing the slide, then the video/objects are out of sync, as the objects are linked to the slide's timeline as opposed to the video one.

How can I get around this?

Hi Agnieszka,

Sorry that we missed your first post.

It sounds like you added your own captions/callouts to a screen recording instead of having them built in with the Storyline screen recording? Based on the Tempshare file that you've shared, it looks like you've enabled the video seekbar, which is different from the slide timeline seekbar which is not enabled. So you're correct, those have separate timelines and those two items will operate independently of each other.

You could set the media to begin playing once the timeline on the arrow appears so that the two items were triggered together.

Hi Agnieszka,

When you're doing a screen recording in Storyline, you'll be able to record mouse clicks or text that you type in and those will automatically generate "callouts" or hint captions to let users know where to look or what is the next step. For more information on using the screen recording feature in Storyline you'll want to start with this tutorial.
