Articulate Storyline has a built-in video editor with several tools for improving embedded video content. After adding a video, just right-click its placeholder on the slide and select Edit Video.

When the video editor opens, you can trim, crop, change the volume, adjust the brightness and contrast, and insert a logo. We'll review each of these features below. (Note: Some features, such as adjusting brightness/contrast and inserting a logo, won't be noticeable if you click the Play button to preview your changes until you click Save & Close.)

Before we explore video editing features, it's important to know that the following types of videos can't be edited:

  • SWF movies can't be edited in Storyline. You'll need to use third-party editing software, then import the edited file into Storyline again.
  • FLV videos with alpha channel transparency can't be edited in Storyline. (Videos without transparency can be edited.)
  • Website videos (Screenr, YouTube, Vimeo, etc.) can't be edited in Storyline.

Trimming a Video

If you need only a portion of a video, use the Trim feature to keep just the part you want. Here’s how:

  1. Click the Trim button on the ribbon.
  2. Draggable markers will appear on the timeline below your video. Drag these markers to change the video's start and end points.
  3. As you drag the start and end points, keep an eye on the Trim Start, Trim End, and Trim Duration values in the lower right corner. These help you see exactly where the video will start/end and how long the trimmed version will be.
  4. You can preview the trimmed video using the Play/Pause and Stop buttons in the lower left corner of the window.
  5. If you change your mind and want to revert back to the video as it was when you first opened the video editor, click Reset Video.
  6. When you've finished editing your video, click Save & Close.

Cropping a Video

The cropping tool lets you change the width and/or height of your video. For example, you might want to crop out something that's distracting, or you might want to control the video's dimensions so it fits better in your course.

  1. Click the Crop button on the ribbon.
  2. A resizable cropping window is added to your video. Click the cropping window to reveal the sizing handles, then drag the borders of the rectangle to select the portion of the video you want to keep. If you want to maintain the original aspect ratio of your video, use the corner sizing handles.
  3. As you drag the cropping window, keep an eye on the Crop value in the lower right corner of the screen. This helps you size the video to the exact dimensions you want.
  4. If you change your mind and want to revert back to the video as it was when you first opened the video editor, click Reset Video.
  5. When you've finished editing your video, click Save & Close.

Adjusting the Volume, Brightness, and Contrast of a Video

You can improve the quality of your video by increasing or decreasing the volume, and adjusting the brightness and contrast.

  1. To adjust the volume, click the Volume button on the ribbon, and use the slider to increase or decrease the percentage. You won’t be able to hear the volume adjustment until you click Save & Close.
  2. To adjust the brightness or contrast, use the Brightness and Contrast fields to specify a percentage. The changes will be visible immediately on the video stage, but they won't be noticeable if you click the Play button to preview the results. To see the brightness and contrast modifications as the video plays, you'll need to click Save & Close to process the video with your changes. (If you've added a logo to your video, changes to brightness and contrast will also affect the logo.)
  3. If you change your mind and want to revert back to the video as it was when you first opened the video editor, click Reset Video.
  4. When you've finished editing your video, click Save & Close.

Adding a Logo or Watermark to a Video

Storyline makes it easy to brand your videos with a logo or watermark. Here’s how:

  1. Click the Insert Logo button on the ribbon.
  2. Browse to the image you want to use as your logo or watermark, and click Open.
  3. Resize the image and place it where you want it to appear on the video.
  4. If you want to add transparency for a watermark effect, enter a percentage in the Transparency field.
  5. If you change your mind and want to remove the image, click the Remove Logo button. Or, click Reset Video to revert back to the video as it was when you first opened the video editor.
  6. When you've finished editing your video, click Save & Close.

Note: You won't be able to see your logo when you preview the video in the video editor, but it'll show up when you preview or publish your overall course.
