Customizing Engage

Now that we know how to build an interaction, we are ready to apply some finishing touches that will better align our interaction to our course. In this example, we're going to work with Engage's Interaction Properties to customize the colors, fonts and sound effects of our interaction.

If you're following along, I'm working in Lesson Files > Chapter_15. Here's a preview of the final Engage interaction.

Interaction Properties

Open your interaction in Engage and click Interaction Properties.

Let's walk through our interaction's properties.

Playback - You can leave everything in this tab set to their default settings.

Labeled Graphic -

  1. Deselect the Volume control checkbox. We didn't use audio in the interaction so we should disable the volume control from appearing.
  2. In the Marker Animation menu, select None.

Colors and Effects

Here's where we'll make the biggest impact to the look and feel for our interaction.

  1. Leave Color Scheme set to (default) for now. We'll update the colors in the next lesson.
  2. In the Animate steps using: menu, select Fade
  3. Deselect the Play sound checkbox
  4. In the Title font menu, select Licence Plate (or Impact if you're working with your default fonts)
  5. In the Content font menu, select Verdana

Quality

Leave everything set to the default settings.

Color Scheme

Now we'll modify our interaction's colors.

  1. Click Colors > New Color Scheme...

All color and text changes are available from the Choose an item to edit menu.

Make the following updates to your Color Scheme.

Background and Text:

  • Background: White
  • Header Background: R: 194, G: 72, B: 55

Callouts:

  • Background: White
  • Text: R: 194, G: 72, B: 55

Save your new Color Scheme

It's always a good practice to save any custom color schemes you create. Even if you never touch your current project again, you can still use the custom scheme as the basis for derivative schemes. It's one of those best practices that saves you time in the long run.

  1. Click OK
  2. Type "DIYTC" in the New scheme name box

Preview your new interaction

What's Next?

Everything looks great! All that remains is to insert the interaction into our course. And that's what we'll do in the next lesson.
