Inserting the Videos

Now that our slides are set up, we can bring in the videos.

This is really the easiest part. And since we have two videos of the same process, we can apply each of the two video playback behaviors:

  1. Synchronize slide and movie
  2. Movie plays independently of slide

Synchronize Slide and Movie

Select Slide 9 in the Outline menu. This is the first video slide after the start screen.

  1. Click Articulate > Flash Movie
  2. Navigate to 10_BranchingVideo\raise_car_01.mp4
  3. Click OK

There are a couple options available at this point. We obviously want the video to Display in slide so we'll leave that option selected. It's the next option that we can experiment with.

  1. For Advance to the next slide: select When user clicks next
  2. Leave Synchronization set to Synchronize slide and movie
  3. Click OK

Preview the video

  1. Click Articulate > Preview > Preview This Slide
  2. Click drag the Seekbar forward and backward to view the synchronization between the video and the seekbar.

Reposition the Video

Now we only need to move the video into place. We don't need to delete the screenshot for video one. Keeping it in place will smoothen the transition when we move from the start screen to the video screen.

TipIcon: You can press the Control key and arrow keys to move the video in 1 pixel increments.

Synchronize slide and movie will sync the player's Seekbar to the video. This enables the on-slide video to be controlled by dragging the Seekbar forward and backward. In most cases, this is the option you'll probably work with.

So what about playing movies independently? This option is most selected when you're inserting more complex Flash-based interactions. Playing independently helps prevent conflicts between Articulate's player and the inserted Flash movies.

Other times, you may want a video to play without giving control to the learner to jump ahead. Let's look at that option now.

Movie Plays Independently of Slide

Select Slide 10 in the Outline menu. You'll import the second video, raise_car_02.flv, using the same steps as before:

  1. Click Articulate > Flash Movie
  2. Navigate to 10_BranchingVideo\raise_car_02.flv
  3. Click OK

Everything at this point should look the same. We still want the slide to advance only after the user clicks next.

  1. For Advance to the next slide: select When user clicks next
  2. For Synchronization set to Movie plays independently of slide
  3. Click OK

Preview the video

  1. Click Articulate > Preview > Preview This Slide
  2. Click drag the Seekbar forward and backward

Notice how the Seekbar no longer controls the video? The video plays independently of the Seekbar and will continue playing for the entire duration of the video.

Reposition the Video

Finally, reposition the video over the second screenshot. Once again, you don't need to delete the screengrab, just position the video over it.

What's Next?

We're going to leave PowerPoint and Presenter for a while and move into Engage. Engage's Labeled Graphic is the perfect interaction for reviewing our tire-changing tools. And that's what we'll create in the next lesson!
