In Engage ’09, it's easy to quickly change up the look of your interaction with a different color scheme, or to edit a color scheme any time. Let's take a look at how to do it.

How to Switch to a Different Color Scheme

  1. Open your interaction in Engage and click the Colors drop-down. The color scheme you're currently using is highlighted yellow. If you've created any custom color schemes, they'll appear at the top of the list. Engage's standard color schemes are listed after that.
  2. Click on any color scheme in the list to apply it to your interaction.
  3. That's it! To see how your output will look with the new scheme, click Preview. If you're not happy with the new look, you can go back and pick a different color scheme, create a new one, or edit the one you applied.

How to Edit a Color Scheme

  1. Open your interaction in Engage and click the Colors drop-down.
  2. Right-click any color scheme in the list and choose Edit.
  3. The color scheme editor will appear, with your interaction displayed in the window. At the bottom of the window, click the drop-down next to Choose an item to edit and select an item from the list.
  4. Now click the color selector drop-down next to it. (If there are two drop-downs, it's because the item you chose has a gradient—so you can choose two colors to apply.) Choose a color, and the window immediately displays how your interaction will look with the change.  If you're not sure what an item is, assign it a really noticeable color, like red or bright yellow, and see what changes on the screen. Then tweak the color from there until things look the way you like.
  5. For the interaction background, you'll also be able to enter a Transparency percentage if you want. This is useful, for example, if you plan to insert your Engage interaction into a Presenter project, and you want your PowerPoint master slide to show through. 6. Click OK when you're done making changes.
  7. If the color scheme you edited was one of Engage's standard schemes, you'll be prompted to enter a new name. This is because the standard schemes can't be edited—so if you do make a change, you need to call the color scheme by a new name, so that the standard color schemes are preserved.

How to Create a New Color Scheme

  1. Open your interaction in Engage and click the Colors drop-down.
  2. Choose New Color Scheme (it's at the bottom of the list).
  3. The color scheme editor will appear, with your interaction displayed in the window. Use the drop-downs at the bottom of the window to choose the item you want to edit, and the color you want to apply.
  4. Click OK when you're done.
  5. When Engage prompts you, enter a name for your color scheme and click OK.

Now, whenever you choose click the Colors drop-down on the Engage toolbar, your new color scheme will appear in the top section of the list, under Custom Schemes.

Sharing a Color Scheme with Other Developers

If you've created a custom color scheme and you want to share it with other Engage users, the easiest way is to give your colleagues an Engage interaction in which you've applied the custom color scheme you want to share. Give the .intr file to your colleagues. Once they save it to to their computer and open it at least once, the custom color scheme will be added to their PC and they'll be able to apply it to other interactions they build or edit.
