Do you need an interaction in multiple languages? Articulate Engage's translation feature can help with that. Here's how:

Step 1: Export the Original Text

First, export a copy of the text from your Engage project:

  1. Click the round Articulate button in the upper left corner, scroll to Translation, and select Export.
  2. Browse to the location where you'd like to save the exported text.
  3. Assign a File name to your document.
  4. Use the Save as type drop-down list to select one of the following formats:
    • Word Document (*.doc): If you’ll be translating the text manually, this is probably your best option.
    • Word Document with Reference Column (*.doc): This is the same document as above with an additional column, so you can always see the text in its original language.
    • XML Localization Interchange File Format (*.xliff): If you’ll be using a translation service or computer program, you may find this file format more useful.
  5. Click Save.

Step 2: Translate the Exported Text

After exporting the text from your interaction, use the resulting Word document or XML file to translate it into other languages. You can use professional translators, an online translation service, or a computer program.

If you’ll be translating the text manually, you'll probably want to use a Word document format. Here are some important things to remember:

  • Only modify text in the column titled Translate this column. Leave all other text unchanged.
  • If you change the text formatting in any way (font, size, color, style, alignment, etc.), those changes will also be reflected in your interaction when you import the file back into Engage. (This doesn't affect step titles, just the content.)

If you'll be using a translation service or computer program, you may find the XML (*.xliff) file more useful.

Step 3: Import the Translated Text

When the translation is ready, import the Word document or XML file back into Engage:

  1. Create a copy of your original interaction file to contain the new language and open it in Engage.
  2. Click the round Articulate button in the upper left corner, scroll to Translation, and select Import.
  3. Browse to the Word document or XML file that contains the translated text and click Open.
  4. When you see the Congratulations message, click OK.
  5. Review the imported text to be sure it fits properly in your interaction and make adjustments as necessary. Some languages use longer words and phrases, so you may need to allow more room for the expanded text or reduce the font size.

Step 4: Localize the Engage Player

While Engage's translation feature lets you modify the slide content, you may also want to customize the player's text labels. Text labels let you localize buttons, tabs, messages, and other player elements for different languages.
