Using Interactive Tables in E-Learning #287: Challenge | Recap

Tables are a simple and effective way to present facts, figures, and other related information. Using simple rows and columns, tables can organize information in ways that make it easy for learners to comprehend.

One of the challenges with using tables in e-learning courses is letting learners see both the big picture concept and the finer details.

To help learners make sense of all that data, you’ll need to layer some interactive elements over your table. And that’s what this week’s challenge is all about!

Challenge of the Week

This week, your challenge is to share an example that demonstrates how interactive tables can be used in e-learning. You can use Storyline’s built-in tables or you can create them from scratch. If you do use Storyline’s tables, please mention that you did when you post your example.

I just reread the instructions and saw that we should mention if we used Storyline's built-in tables. I did, but I made borders and fill transparent. I made this using only Storyline triggers (no javsacript), which was a bit fiddly, but seems to work. The new features of the trigger panel saved me some headaches :)

It took me a bit of time to think up a way that I could usefully embellish an Excel Spreadsheet, so that any additional graphics and images contributed useful information to the bare numbers. I think I was influenced by Stephanie Harnett's example in the previous version of this challenge 2 years ago. I'm working on short e-learning for OKRs, and this challenge gave me ideas on demonstrating that you can set, track, and align OKRs using spreadsheets for beginners. I'm using storyline tables: 1) to show OKRs' characteristics; 2) how to track achievement; 3)show initiatives. I've used variables, triggers, and states in the table slides. I wanted to share an introduction to OKRs first. Tables are at the end if you wish to skip the short presentation. I welcome any ideas and feedback that help me improve.

The information in my table isn't content-based, but using a table made customizing the user experience a little easier. Sushi Demo Table Revised New Demo: https://jodichallenges.s3.amazonaws.com/287+Sushi+Table/story.html One thing that is awesome about this community is when you get stuck, someone always can help you out. I didn't like how my sushi was rendering on the board at the end of my demo. I wanted it to look more appetizing--like a sushi chef would place it. Dave Cox gave me a solution and Michael Hinze took the time to re-work my file with his logic and javascript skills. I was able to reproduce his layers and triggers to get this where I wanted it--so the sushi doesn't look random on the board. He also gave me a challenge to allow people to unselect items--my project for next week will be to work through that logic and toggling. Thank you Dave and Michael!
