New Employee Orientation and Onboarding in E-Learning #389

Onboarding and New Hire Training #389: Challenge | Recap

Employee orientation training is one of the most popular types of e-learning. Onboarding is typically the first training employees encounter at their new company, so it’s essential to get it right. What should you include in onboarding training? What does onboarding training look like? Well, that’s what this week’s challenge is all about.

Challenge of the Week

This week, your challenge is to create an onboarding example for new employees. You don't need to build a comprehensive onboarding course. Instead, we want to see different approaches for onboarding new employees.

For example, using placeholder content, you can create your demo for a fictional or real company. Or, develop your onboarding demo for your own e-learning company. Who knows? You may need to onboard some new course designers one day.

Designing Onboarding Using Common E-Learning Interactions

I always enjoyed building onboarding training because of the mix of instructional and interaction design. The course design begins with the content topics and lessons. But when you're ready to dive into development, common e-learning interactions can help you with the presentation design.

Pre-Boarding with ClickFirst Demo: https://jodisdemos.s3.amazonaws.com/389+ClickFirst+OnBoarding/index.html#/ This challenge seemed like a good job for RISE. When I worked in the corporate world one issue we had with new hires is how to keep their interest between the day they accepted an offer and their first day. Sometimes 90 days would pass before they would start. We used to implement a communication plan to keep them engaged. My demo is a pre-boarding communication to get a new hire ready for their start date, with instructions on how to get their pre-employment paperwork out of the way and give them an idea of what to expect when they show up their first week. This lucky new hire is starting a job at an award-winning, hip ad agency. It includes every hip agency values and t... Expand

Orientation at COI. (Turn on your audio!!) Demo: https://360.articulate.com/review/content/e547116a-6977-4cdf-84d8-93c60f8be7db/review This interaction follows a new person on their first day with COI. I tried some firsts for me as well as some standards. 1) I created a flashlight type interaction using a very large slider with a cutout. 2) I turned photos into 360 images by duplicating portions of the photo and adding a top and bottom. 3) I imported a previous project and made a few tweeks to tie it into my orientation. 4) I used multiple scrolling panels on a slide to simulate a rolling padlock. 5) I used the new "Print Slide" command to print a slide 6) I used lightboxes to recall a previously designed item and to ease access to an item that might be commonly used. 7) I... Recently, my company adopted Axonify as our learning experience platform which naturally led to a reconsideration of the scope, sequence, format and length of our content. Our new hire orientation course was approximately 30 minutes long in a single course. Taking a microlearning approach, I've make the pivot to Fasterclasses for each segment. The first module covers company culture, vision, values and goals. The redesign uses Rise as a shell and has a Storyline interaction that simulates the company's e-commerce app so that learners can "shop" for the company's cultural elements. Companion events for this module include a monthly live workshop to deep dive into the culture and practical applications and an undated planner for the welcome kit that includes the daily questions intro...
