What the End of Adobe Flash Means for Storyline 1, Storyline 2, Studio ’09, or Studio ’13
Nov 02, 2020
We want to make sure everyone in the E-Learning Heroes community is aware that Adobe will disable Flash as of December 31, 2020. If you use Storyline 1, Storyline 2, Studio ‘09, or Studio ‘13 to create or update content, Adobe’s decision to disable Flash has important implications for you. Because authoring in Storyline 1, Storyline 2, Studio ‘09, and Studio ‘13 is dependent on Adobe Flash, you’ll no longer be able to author content with these apps so we will no longer be supporting them after December 31, 2020. And, any content you’ve published to Flash with these apps won’t work after this date. To make sure that your content keeps working, you will need to republish it to HTML5.
Let’s walk through a few resources we’ve pulled together that can help you prepare for the end of Adobe Flash.
- Once Adobe disables the Flash Player, you might not be able to use Storyline 1, Storyline 2, Studio ‘09, or Studio ‘13 reliably and we will no longer support them. Learn more about what to expect in How the End of Flash Will Impact Your Authoring Experience.
- If you have previously published projects created with Storyline 1, Storyline 2, Studio ‘09, and Studio ‘13, you’ll need to republish them to HTML5. Both Articulate 360 (which includes Storyline 360 and Studio 360) and Storyline 3 generate HTML5 output which works in all modern web browsers. Learn more about how your Articulate courses will work in, How to Make Sure Your Articulate Courses Work after the End of Flash. And get organized for updating your Flash-based courses using the tips and the free download included in 4 Simple Steps for Updating Your Flash-Based Courses.

Hi, I'm updating some Storyline 2 files to SL360. I'm using the classic player. Is it best to include the flash fallback option as a lot of our customers could still potentially be using older browsers?
Hi, I have a course that keeps on publishing flash files to the LMS file, even when I select HTML5 only. This course uses the "Jump to Time" trigger, which means it should only be published to HTML5. As a result, the course will not function in the LMS unless flash is enabled. How can I get the course to publish without the Flash files?
Hello Siobhan!
Your published courses will continue to work if they include HTML5 output. Web browsers will simply ignore the Flash content and display the HTML5 version instead if you're publishing with Flash Fallback.
Great! Thank you for the confirmation :)
Hello Mallory!
It sounds like you're running into a bug that we've logged where Flash files appear in the published output folder when the course has a Jump to Time trigger. Our team is actively looking into this bug, and I'll make sure to report back to this discussion when I have an update.
In the meantime, most browsers will ignore Flash, so it shouldn't affect your course's behavior. If it does, our Support Engineers are ready to troubleshoot!
I'm happy to return to this discussion with an update!
Today, we released Storyline 360 Update 48! Here are the features and fixes released in this update. You might notice the bug you reported has been fixed!
Fixed: When publishing a course with the classic player style and HTML5-only features, such as jump-to-time triggers or multiple completion criteria, the output erroneously included Flash files.
Now all you need to do is update Storyline 360 in your Articulate 360 desktop app! Thank you for taking the time to report this bug to us.
