Balancing visual design in narrated learning
Sep 10, 2020
I have a passion for using narration effectively in online learning. So often, it can be an 'after-thought' - but what is being said and what is seen on screen should compliment, not clash.
I have been using an awesome resource for simply ages in our capability training sessions to show how to balance the words and images to the greatest effect. The original resource used the explanation of cell towers and I got it from this community years ago! However, as it is in Flash, we thought we'd update it using Articulate Rise and Adobe for the animation.
Here is our version. It's a free resource so feel free to use and share it widley. It may help you to demonstrate how the engagement and retention of learning can potentially change depending on the extent to which your images are overlaid with text message.

This is great, Cathy! I guess there is a time and place for all five of the text/narration options, but the last two are certainly the most engaging.
Thanks for your efforts in producing this new version and for sharing it with us! :)
Cheers,
Anne
Thanks for sharing Cathy. After watching the last example I actually had to go back and check the transcript to make sure it was all covered - went by much faster when in a more engaging format!
This is a wonderful example, Cathy! I agree with Anne and Shaun. The last example was engaging and went by so fast even though it was the same script! Super cool to see the comparisons. Thanks for sharing!
