Reset Drag and Drop items without resetting attempts

I've looked through a lot of posts about this topic going back 7+ years without seeing a solution that works in Storyline 360.

I've created a drag and drop interaction with attempts set to 2. After the first attempt, I would like the drag assets to be reset to their starting positions so I added a trigger to the Try Again button to jump to the current slide with the slide settings set to Reset To Initial State. 

While that does indeed reset my drag assets, as so many other people have stated, it then allows the user unlimited attempts at the interaction. If I set the slide settings to Resume Saved State then the drag assets do not reset.

I've set some variables in order to try and track attempts and break out of the loop that way but they keep getting reset by the Initial State setting. I've gone so far as to reset my workflow to the old classic workflow to get more options in variables, all with no luck.

Any help anyone could give would be much appreciated.
