When I try to open my course, I get an error saying "This project is invalid or corrupt and cannot be opened. It may have been created in an earlier version of Storyline." I updated Storyline, so does that mean I can't open this course now? It took me WEEKS to create, please tell me it's not lost!
You'll want to check that you're working with local project files as described here as that error message is generally associated with working off a network/shared drive.
Please try importing the file into a new file as described here, as that may help with an invalid project file.
Thank you Leslie, I will be sure to do that in the future. This particular course is stored on my network drive for back-up right now. Oddly, I have a few other courses in the same folder that aren't giving me the same error. I tried moving the troubled course onto my desktop and open it from there, and cannot. Is there a way to fix the one that I cannot open? Or do I have to re-create it? :(
If you cannot open the file, then I suggest that you start a new file and try to import the file that you already built. This will save you from having to start from scratch. Check the link that I shared above.
I apologize Teresa, I didn't realize that you were trying to import Powerpoint. I was under the assumption that you could not open your Storyline file.
This post has just helped recover yesterday's work from a file that won't open. After Teresa's experience I only imported one section rather than all of them at the same time. Whew. I'll put my questions about managing large files on a different thread.
I'm having the same issue. I was just working on a file an hour ago and now it won't open. It says the file is corrupt and perhaps created on an older version.
However, there may still be a working version of your project in your temp files. Here's how to check:
Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline
Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.
Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.
Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.
File corruption is unpredictable, and there's no straightforward way to determine what causes it. Common causes include but aren't limited to:
Environmental (disk errors, power outages, improper shutdowns)
Viruses
Failed Windows updates
File size (i.e., very large files have a higher risk of corrupting)
2. Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.
3. Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.

I tried that and got an error, "Exception during Import Powerpoint." But I imported the original Storyline project.
I apologize Teresa, I didn't realize that you were trying to import Powerpoint. I was under the assumption that you could not open your Storyline file.
Could you share your .story file?
I am trying to import a Storyline file, and I'm confused why the error said power point. Is there a way for me to share the .story file privately?

Hi Teresa! Yes, I apologize for not sharing that. You are welcome to share privately here.

Hey Sana,
I'm really sorry that happened!

Thank you Ali ! This worked
Great, Sana! So glad to hear that. 🎉
Hello all, the same just happened to me and I tried the following solutions I have gotten from different articles.
None of them worked. Please help! I don't want to have to start this project all over again. I attached me error message when i try to open the file.
Hi Wuraola.
Have you tried looking in your temp files?
Here's how to check:
1. Open this folder in Windows Explorer:
%Appdata%\Articulate\Storyline
2. Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.
3. Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.
4. Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.
Yes I have searched all temp files and app data. No luck! 😩
