Content 360 Library: Icons & Shape Fill/Recoloring

Hello everyone,

I have come across some icons that must be formatted different within Storyline. With most icons, I have the Shape Fill option. This option allows me to recolor the entire icon with ease.

However, I have discovered the occasional icon that does not have a Shape Fill option under the Format ribbon. Instead, it has a Picture Shape option in its place. I'm assuming this is because Content Library 360 pulls icons from various sources and they are not all the same file types.

When I get the Picture Shape option instead, I have tried to use Recolor to change the fill color instead. But selecting any color from the More Variations submenu does not result in a change. Interestingly, using one of the pre-set recolors does result in the color changing properly.

My workaround is to manually edit the icon in another software or to choose a different icon, but this adds development time and/or makes me use a second or third-best choice.

Has anyone else run into this issue before? It's a small inconvenience, but I love recoloring icons and this always throws me off when it happens. 😅

Yep, I’ve run into the exact same thing in Storyline — you’re not alone! 🙋‍♀️ It usually happens because some of the icons are being imported as vector shapes (which let you use Shape Fill) while others come in as bitmap images (which only give you Picture formatting options). That’s why Recolor works with preset options but not when you try to pick a custom fill — Storyline just doesn’t “read” those icons as editable shapes.

A couple of things that have helped me:

    • Check the file type — if you can, download the SVG version of the icon and import it. Storyline treats those as shapes most of the time.
    • Ungroup the icon (if possible) — sometimes right-clicking and ungrouping will break it into editable shapes you can recolor.
    • If all else fails, I do the same workaround you mentioned: quick edit in Illustrator/PowerPoint/other software and reimport.

It’s definitely a small annoyance, but hopefully Articulate will standardize how the Content Library handles icons in the future. Until then, it’s a bit of trial and error.

      Hi Frankie and Ratayba512,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing how standardized icons across the Content Library would be beneficial!
