Focus Order Testing without Screen Reader?

Hi all - It has been impossible to get access to a screen reader on my company laptop, so I cannot test my learning with a real screen reader. I have a few questions:

  1.  I have read elsewhere on Articulate's forums that Windows Narrator isn't reliable for screen reader testing. Is there another way to double check my focus order in a published project?

  2. I tried tabbing through screen elements in Review 360 and it skipped almost everything on the slide - it was random what it picked up, as almost everything has a trigger attached to it and is clickable. Is focus order supposed to work in Review 360?

  3. Bonus Question: I have read older threads about this, but want to double check if it's still important to put the slide layers in a certain order in the focus order window? Do they all need to be at the top?

Thank you!

  • Not ideal but most browsers and OS's have a built in screen reader

For slide layers if they are modal set them so you cannot click below and they do not need to go in order for other layers they should still be in order

Actually, yes! The Tab option in Storyline does work based on the Focus Order. For example, if you have interactive buttons with layers for each button, you’ll want to structure your focus order carefully:

    • Place the button first in the order.
    • Follow it with the elements from the layer that appears when the button is clicked.
    • Then continue to the next button on the base layer, and so on.

Also, make sure to remove any unwanted objects from the focus order so the learner isn’t tabbing through hidden or decorative items. This is essentially how the tabbing sequence in Storyline follows the structure you define in the focus order.
