Resetting layers buttons and test answers

I have a learning module that has layer button as well as several test questions at the end of each scene. I set up the layer buttons to 'reset to initial state' so when the learner goes back to restart the course (after failing the test 3 times) the test does not reset. How can I get both things to reset when the learner needs to restart the module?

  • Hi doneenchildress!

    Great question!

In Storyline 360, Slide content and Quiz data are handled a bit differently. When a Slide Layer is set to "Resent to initial state", Storyline only resets visual elements from that Slide.

However, Quiz questions function differently. Quiz data such as answers, or learner attempts, are stored by internal quiz variables that persist across scenes. Navigating back to earlier Slides or restarting a scene does not clear those variables. As a result, even though your layers reset visually, the Quiz still "remembers" the learner’s previous attempts.

One option you can explore is resetting both Slide content and Quiz data by using a Restart Course Trigger. Add a Button on the failure message or on the "Restart" Slide and link it to the Trigger set to Restart Course when the learner clicks it. This will fully reset all Slides, Layers, and Quiz data stored by the learner's session.

Another option is using the Results Slide's "Retry Quiz" feature. If your Quiz is tied to a Results Slide, you can let Storyline handle the reset for you.

    1. Ensure all Quiz questions are connected to a single Results Slide.
    2. Enable the Retry Quiz option on that Results Slide.
    3. When the learner fails, send them to the Results Slide and allow them to retry.

Clicking Retry Quiz automatically resets all Quiz question Slides and scoring variables while keeping the rest of the course in tact.

  • Now, I'm having trouble with the Results Slide working on the first scene. I set it up like another course I designed last year, and it is working perfect. But the course I am doing know will not proceed to the Results Slide. It just freezes. I have started over adding all new slides and still having the same issue.

  • doneenchildress: When you insert a new Results slide, Storyline automatically creates the necessary built-in scoring variables.

If you copy-and-paste, duplicate, or import a Results slide, the variables get messed up. That prevents the slide from loading.

Usually, this can be fixed by adjusting the triggers to use the appropriate reference (if it's already been created). Or sometimes you can just rename the quiz in the Result slide's Quiz Setting so the name matches the references being used in the triggers.

Also, be sure that the “score” and “percent” references in the text boxes refer to the appropriate variables.

And, sometimes, you just have to start from scratch by inserting a brand new Results slide.
