Scenario Backgrounds - What size? What scale?

Whenever I choose one of the built in backgrounds my character looks like he is a tiny elf.  It seems pretty unlikely that a random image will have the proper scale for the character. But there is no way to adjust either the background or the character. Nor can we predict the scale and angle necessary.

What workflow to people use? I really like the format but it seems very limited.
