Screen Reader interaction with object triggers.

If a user is using a screen reader and only using the Next and Previous buttons on the media player, how do they advance from layer to layer? If the audio instructs to select an object trigger on a layer to continue, how does a screen reader know where that is?

  • Hi AnnieNielsen,

Thanks for raising this, accessibility in these interactions is really important.

I want to make sure I’m understanding your setup correctly. When you mention users navigating with only the Next and Previous buttons, are they also able to use keyboard navigation like the Tab key, or is the design expecting them to rely solely on the player controls?

In Storyline, screen readers typically follow the focus order and rely on keyboard navigation to move between interactive objects. So if a layer requires selecting an object to continue, that object would need to be part of the focus order and clearly labeled so it can be announced and reached.

If you’re able to share a bit more about how the object is set up, for example whether it’s in the focus order or how it’s labeled, that would help narrow down the best approach.
