Storyline AI text to speech does not export.

I have looked up and seen a few variations of this, but not really a resolution.

AI text to speech is not included in Rise. So to import audio narration, I need to create the text to speech narration in Storyline, export the file, and upload into Rise. This was also the method demo'ed in one of the AI learning on demands I watched.

However... there is an issue (as reported by others) in doing this.

I have a single slide in Storyline and have generated 4 separate AI text to speech narrations. I was able to right-click on the first one and click “export audio” and this worked, and I was able to save the file. However, for the remaining 3 audio tracks, when I right-click and select “export audio” on the track in the timeline, nothing at all happens. If I try clicking the audio track, and select audio tool options from the ribbon at the top > then “Export audio”, I get the error message pop up saying something went wrong.

Troubleshooting I have tried:

  • Open closing storyline, over multiple days.
  • Uninstalling and reinstalling storyline
  • rebooting pc
  • Regenerating the tracks
  • moving the storyline file closer to my computer path/onto my desktop

Nothing works. Others seem to have also posted this - is there a fix being worked on?

  • Update After working with tech support they were unable to help resolve the issue as they couldn't replicate it.

However... I DID find a simple workaround!

    1. Create your AI text to speech
    2. In the timeline, right-click the AI TTS line and select "Show in media library"
    3. In the media library, it will have a name the same as the text which is really long and causing the issue - change the audio name to something short like tts1, tts2 etc
    4. To export, while still in the media player, select the line item you want to export, then click the little export button on the bottom right (near the insert audio clip button.)

  • Hi JustinBurns!

Sorry to hear you've run into this setback when exporting AI Text-to-Speech from Storyline!

This behavior sounds similar to a bug we have logged for Storyline 360. When AI-generated TTS audio is exported, the filename that gets used is based on the audio text, and can be quite long. As a result, Storyline errors can occur if the filename added to the previous file path remembered by Storyline exceeds the Windows file path limit.

Our support engineers would like to dive deeper into this issue with you, so I've opened a support case on your behalf. They should be connecting with you via e-mail shortly! In the meantime, a workaround you may find useful is to export a non-AI TTS file, to a short file path (< 100 characters) first, then export subsequent AI-TTS audio.

We can continue the conversation through your case to keep all information in one spot.

  • Hi JustinBurns !

I have some great news to share. We've release a new version of Storyline 360 which included a fix for the issue that caused Storyline 360 to crash when exporting AI text-to-speech audio

To take advantage of this update, launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer and click the Update button next to Storyline 360. You'll find step-by-step instructions here.

Please let us know if you have any questions by posting here or reaching out to our Support Engineers directly.
