New in Labs: Lesson Generation

Lesson Generation is in active development as part of Labs. Functionality will evolve, and we may modify or remove certain features based on user feedback and stability. To access this feature, make sure it's turned on in Labs, and AI is enabled.

Adding a lesson to a course you’ve already built may involve reviewing existing lessons, matching the tone, and ensuring you’re not duplicating content. With Lesson Generation, AI handles that context for you. Describe the lesson you need, approve the direction and outline, and place it anywhere in your course. Keep reading to learn more.

Understand Lesson Generation

Generating a lesson with AI adds a new lesson to a course you’ve already started. Before drafting, AI reviews your existing lessons and source materials to ensure the new lesson matches your course’s tone and avoids duplicating existing content.

Two checkpoints keep you in the driver’s seat. First, AI recommends a few lesson directions, and you pick one or create your own. Then, AI drafts a lesson title, description, and structure that you can edit directly or refine in chat. Nothing is added to your course until you click Generate.

Generate a New Lesson

Here’s how to generate a new lesson:

  1. Go to the course overview page, click Add content > Lesson > Generate lesson.
  2. Describe the lesson you want in the chat box in the lower right or select one of the prebuilt prompts:
    • Suggest a new lesson for this course
    • Help me write a summary lesson for this course
    • Help me find gaps in what my course covers
    • What do my source materials cover that my lessons don't?
  3. (Optional) Click the interactive text in the AI’s chat response to review actions taken.
  4. Choose from recommended lesson topics or type your own in the Something else field. Click Skip if you want to dismiss the suggestions.
  5. Review the proposed outline, which includes the lesson title, description, and structure displayed on the left.
    • Click any field to edit it directly, or
    • Describe what you'd like changed in the chat box.
  6. Change the lesson placement using the Position dropdown.
  7. (Optional) Click Clear chat (eraser icon) in the upper-right corner to start over, or click Close chat (x icon) to cancel the lesson generation.
  8. Click Generate once you’re ready.

A progress indicator will appear in the lower-left corner while the new lesson builds. Click Cancel generation any time if you change your mind.

Improve Your Results

Follow these tips to achieve better results:

  • Name the gap you want to fix if you already know what's missing by describing it instead of asking for a suggestion.
  • Enter a different direction if you don’t like the recommendations, or edit the outline instead of starting over.
  • Make small edits yourself by trimming a description or rewording a title, rather than re-prompting.
  • Ask for one change at a time since bulk requests can be harder for the AI model to get right the first time.
  • Set the lesson placement before you generate to avoid reordering later.

FAQs

How is this different from AI Course Drafts and Magic Lesson Import?

The AI Course Drafts feature helps you build an entire course from scratch, while Magic Lesson Import converts existing files into lessons. Lesson Generation fits between them—it adds a single lesson to a course that's already partially built, using what's already there as context.

Is Lesson Generation available in Storyline 360 or Frontline?

No. Lesson Generation is currently available only in Rise 360.

Where can I upload additional source material?

AI will review your existing content and source material. If you have additional source material you’d like to include before generating a new lesson, you can upload it directly to the chat. Upload files from your computer or import them directly from Google Drive or OneDrive. To manage all the source material in your course, go to the course settings by clicking the gear icon at the top, then select the Source Content tab.

What if I don't like the result?

The generated lesson behaves like any other Rise 360 lesson, so you can edit it block by block or delete it and try again with a different prompt.

A thought I had today... I was editing an AI generated lesson and needed to add quite a bit to it and realized I really needed to section off about half of the lesson and create a whole separate lesson. I tried to get the AI assistant to identify where the break needed to happen and where the new lesson needed to begin. Is this something that could happen with this new feature?
