A Learning Record Store (LRS) is a server that stores data from both informal and formal learning experiences. This can be things like:

  • E-learning courses
  • Websites
  • Social media apps
  • Virtual or in-person conferences or events
  • Discussion boards
  • Books

But that’s not all—the sky really is the limit when it comes to the different systems LRSs can track. Find out more here.

In addition to tracking learning data in more places, LRSs can track learning experiences in greater detail using xAPI statements. Beyond tracking things like the learner’s score on a quiz or the time they spend on a course, like a Learning Management System (LMS) can, LRSs can track things like the click path learners followed to get from one learning experience to another.

You can use an LRS in addition to an LMS, or on its own if it has built-in hosting capabilities.

Basically, LRSs allow training professionals to centralize the tracking of learner data to get a more complete picture of how and what their team members are learning.
