Editing Audio Files in Engage - Appears to increase file size
Jun 20, 2012
I was recently investigating why my file size of my course was rather large ~123MB and look at some of the larger Engage Interactions. I noticed one that was almost 40 MB. It is a guided image with approximately 1.2 MB of images, 4 and 4 MB of audio. I know that the Flash animations will add to it but didn't expect it to increase 10 times larger. I decided to rebuild the interaction from scratch to see if there was any additional hidden images or audio. I rebuilt it and the file size came in at just over 9 MB and I assumed it was OK. I noticed two of the images had a slightly louder audio volume then the others. I made adjustments to the the two guided images with the slightly higher volume. I went back to look at the new file size and it increased by 4 MB.
Does Engage or the audio editor function create duplicate audio files when adjusting in the editor, hence increasing the file size? Is this a known issue and what can be done to still utilize the audio editing function without seeing my file size explode?
Thanks,
Dave

Hey Dave!
Mind sharing your project files so we can check out what's going on? Please create an Articulate Presenter package, then upload the zip file to our server. You can review how to do this here:

Please be sure to include a description of your issue, your version of PowerPoint, version of Windows and version of Presenter '09, which you can find in Help and Support -> About Articulate Presenter. Please also include the URL for this thread so I can follow up with you personally in the forums. And feel free to come back and leave your case number here so I can keep a close eye on it. Thanks!
Hey Peter,
Thanks for your reply. I have spoken with my manager about sending over the course, however due to confidentiality/proprietary information I cannot send you the entire course. She did state it would be OK for me to send over to you a portion of the course if that will work. I can send over to you the Engage Interaction in question, both the older (larger) version and the newer (smaller) version I rebuilt, in a Presenter file.
Will that work for you?
Dave
Sure, that'll work! And just a quick question: how are you saving the files - locally, or to a network drive? I've seen some issues with file sizes blowing up when they're saved to a network or USB drive, so that's the first place I'd check.
If not, we'll look forward to getting the files Thanks!
Hi Peter,
I am saving it to my local hard drive.

Hi Peter,
I was just following up to the question/concerns I sent in last week. Has there been any progress or developments yet?
Thanks,
Dave
Hi Dave!
Really sorry about the delay. I've just contacted your case manager and am waiting for a reply, at which point I'll check back in right away.
