Help with JAWS and Studio 13
Feb 17, 2015
I have created several courses. I have not had the pleasure of dealing with screen readers in the past, and now I have several learners who need to use them. They are using JAWS. I have materials developed with Studio 13, published in SCORM format, uploaded to Moodle, and displayed on IE9 (don't blame me!).
I figured out part of the issue. My fault on this one where I failed to put in the Alt Text. However, the JAWS reader is not picking up the next/prev buttons, any of it.
One big issue is in several of my Engage interactions, there are hyperlinks to YouTube videos. Using the tab key to navigate through the interactions, it is not picking up that there is a hyperlink in the interaction, and therefore not able to be selected.
I am trying to ensure 508 compliance, all of my presentations have the notes pages available with the scripts, any videos I made have the closed captioning. I just cannot seem to get JAWS to read everything and the hyperlinks (created in Engage Interactions) will not work with a keyboard. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Scott,
I believe that JAWS only supports using the latest version of Internet Explorer - so that may be a part of the issue you're running into. Have you tested in IE11 to see how it behaves? Also what version of JAWS are you using?
You may also want to review the information here in regards to JAWS and Studio '13.
Hello Ashley,
Thanks for responding.
We are using IE9, which unless our technology department updates it we cannot. Reality of public employment. We are also using JAWS version 16.0.1925.
I reviewed all of documentation, and I am making some changes accordingly. I have figured out a lot of the issues already. But I cannot figure out why the screen reader is not picking up on the links in any of the Engage interactions.
I also cannot get it to read the Prev/Next buttons or any of the other items from the user interface from the Presenter. It is also not reading any of the other items in the Presenter player, menu, notes, etc.
I would send a copy of the training, however I am not allowed to for security reasons.
Thanks again,
Scott
Hi Scott,
Are you able to test in Internet Explorer 11? I ask, because I believe that's what JAWS supports based on the newest update and that may be where the issue lies.
If you're able to share privately you can also share with our team here, you'll just want to pull it into a presenter package.
I talked to our Technology Services Division, they won't even entertain the idea of upgrading to IE 11, it hasn't been tested for security issues by our staff. So I cannot test IE 11 with it. I am limited to IE 9. I did get permission to share the presentation which I am sending to the contact information you provided. Thank you for your assistance.
Hi Scott,
Thanks for the update and please let me know when you've sent the files along.
I have sent the files to be reviewed. Thanks, I really appreciate this.
Thanks Scott - I see you're working with Karla on your case (# 00468279 for my reference).
Thanks Scott for sending along your file and I do see that Karla was able to replicate this and reported it to our QA team for additional review. We'll keep you posted in the case and here in the thread with any additional updates.
