Problem with resizing embedded engage interactions
Feb 14, 2011
Hello,
I wonder if you can help me?
I have managed to embed an engage interation into my presentation, and then re-size it, but am now having problems when viewing it online.
When I publlish my file, it works locally with no problems, but when it is viewed in IE the engage interactions go back to full size! The really odd thing is that when you click on the page again and refresh it, the animation is exactly where I want it to be?? Has anyone got any ideas??
The link below takes you to the training - you will need to click on the 'History' tab, and then click the forward arrow at the bottom of the page - you will see the engage file in an odd position - then click the history tab again, and you'll see it move!! I am pulling my hair out trying to fix it... I really hope some one out there can help me..
Thanks.

Hi Tracey,
I tried it in 3 different browsers but I am not seeing any issues. How are you re-sizing the presentation by the way? Sometimes you have to make changes in more than one place.
Hi Robert,
Thanks for your quick reply!
I am importing the engage interaction from within the final PPT using 'Insert Flash movie', in the Articulate tab. I am resizing it by just grabbing the corners and dragging them until I get the desired size.
What browsers did you try? Have you tried Internet Explorer? That is the one I am having problems with, and (ironically) this is the one that most, if not all of my final users will be using.
Tracey
Based on that, I would suggest importing it as a webobject. Since it looks like you have already published the engage as a standalone, I would say import as a web object and then you can edit the sizing of the swf itself in the HTML file. If you need help with that, I can walk you through it. PM me. Can't find a link or write anything extensive here this morning due to time. If anyone else has a link for this, that would be great. Jeanette?
It's interesting... The steps in this tutorial should accomplish what you want/need to do, and it sounds like you are following them but its not working for some reason.

I noticed this problem too with the current project I'm working on. Using the insert flash to embed an engage - then when published it tries to go to full size - I've checked the properties which say the size is supposed to be the smaller one. Also - Can go to another slide & then back to it and it will eventually work correctly about the 3rd time. (although my nav is in the page so if it goes full size, I cant even continue.) I'm using Chrome.
I have used this same method several months ago with no problems.
Things went much more smoothly for me when importing as a webobject.
Hello again...
I have tried to embed as a webobject but it is looking for the index.html file and my html file is called engage. How can I get around this? Is it just a simple re-naming exercise? Although if I simply rename the html file to index, it doesnt work.
I know it's a long-shot but could it be because I am working with ppt 2010? What version are you using Karyn? Perhaps if I saved it as an earlier version it might work??
Tracey
I'm using 2010 as well. I haven't had a chance to test the webobject way yet - but will try it later on. ... But if it only looks for index.html, just rename the html file.
Tracey,
Yes, as Karyn said, simply rename engage.html to index.html.
Renaming the file does make sense, but that then gives me a couple of questions ...
I really appreciate all of the help you are giving me... thanks
Oh well.... saving ina an earlier version of PPT doesn't make any difference at all :(
I'm going to try to webobject option now...
Definitely shouldn't be a PPT version issue - I'm running Win 7, PPT 2010 and the most recent version of Articulate and don't have the same problem.
It's unfortunate you have to resort to using a web object - one thing to keep in mind with web objects is the fact that if you are using any tabs (attachments, etc.) they will open up behind the web object rendering them unusable to your learner.
Hi Tracey, Once you import that webobject and point it to the correct folder, Articulate does the rest. It pulls it into the correct place. It creates its own webobject folder inside of the published data folder.
Brian, can you explain more about the "tabs" you are referring to with web objects? I'm not sure I understand, at least not with an engage file.
I have managed to import using web objects, and they work, which is great - Thank you Robert.
I now have another problem, which is that the enage interactions are too small, if I try to make them bigger the white background obscures my master slide. I have tried publishing them with a transparent background, and then ticking the box in the original ppt to say show master slide, but I cant seemt o change it... Is there any script that can be edited to make the background around the edges totally transparent so I can make full use of the space I have on the slide?
Here is the link again, with the updated interactions in it - I can not get them any bigger without a white box appearing around the edge!
And Brian - Thank you for the top tip - I've not really worked with web objects before, so it will definitely help
Tracey
oops - forgot the link !! doh !!

What size did you make the web object when you inserted it? There are two things to look at:
1. The size that you made the web object upon insertion and,
2. The size of the flash object itself which can be found in the code in the index.html file.
Problem fixed :)
You are a star Robert, thank you so much for your patience :)
Tracey
Not a prob. Other people have been patient with me . My wife included
I now have another problem.... can I hear you sighing!!
When the window is resized, my webobject isnt resizing with it - the outer skin resizes perfectly, but the webobject just gets scroll bars and doesn't change.
Does anyone know the html code that I can use to stop this happening?
Tracey
LOL. Adding code to keep the sizing dynamic can be a little wonky here. I would just lock the player at optimal size so that the user gets the same size every time in this case.
in relation to the issues stated on this forum i am experiencing the same problems when im exporting my online resource. I have followed the process suggested, however with regards the same problem that @Tracey Kench was experiencing regarding the window now being re-sized and the web object not re-sizing, how is it possible to change the size of the swf file that it exported from Articulate Engage, so that when i scale the placeholder inside PowerPoint the swf file will scale and when i publish the embedded interaction will:
a) not go back to full screen in a browser
b) look seamless on the design.
Pleas help as i am so close with regards to completion but this issue is holding me back from being signed off.
many thanks
