I realise this has probably been covered many many times but it's proving to be difficult to nail down an answer in this case.
I have an established group: a background shot with a semi transparent polygon to give it gravitas. Done. Happy. Brilliant.
However, now I have another rectangle that I'd like to add to this group - let's call it "BG". I've tried ctrl+click and drag onto the group - no luck. Select the group and the new element and use CTRL+G - nada.
I'd agree with Matthew - select them all to ungroup and use your Shift or CTRL key to keep them selecting while you select the other new item and then choose to group again.
I have the same issue. Recreate the group is not an option for me, because the group has a lot of configurations (animations, transitions, motion path, ...) if I do that I'm going to lose all my work.
Are there any other work arround to add an item into an existing (and configured) group?
This should really be a simple select the element and right click to add to a group, which would be a dropdown menu under "move to." But, alas, it's not...
Maybe just to further explain the need to such a function, groups often have triggers and animations. If you forget to group an element or have to add an element to an existing, you need to ungroup, thus breaking any programming with it.
I've been toying with motion paths, and while groups can be animated with paths, these need to be redrawn if I need to add an element. Same goes with triggers.
It would be even better if it was a simple drag and drop implemented the same way they do it in Photoshop and Illustrator where you just drag an object into a group in the layers panel - so in the timeline in Storyline. Or the same way you can drag menu items to nest them in the player menu properties.
Anything new on this? It's been 4 years and this seems like a necessity to me. If I break a group to add something new, I have to do all the animations, renaming, etc. for the new group.
While this feature hasn't made it on our feature roadmap yet, this discussion is connected to the report, so we'll be sure to notify you when we have news to share.
Groups play so poorly with triggers and shapes, that more and more, I don't use them. Instead, I copy all the elements and paste them onto the Normal state. Looks like a group, acts like one object.
I am jumping into this discussion to share that we just released Storyline 360 (Build 3.63.27628.0) which includes changes to the timeline.
New: Create slides faster with time-saving upgrades to the timeline. Multi-select objects and move them all at once. Choose where pasted objects appear in the stacking order or even paste them into an existing group. Align objects to the playhead or vice versa. And when the timeline is too long, you can instantly reset it to five seconds or shorten it to the object with the longest duration.
Now all you need to do is update Storyline 360 in your Articulate 360 desktop app!
If you have additional questions, don't hesitate to reach out in this discussion or in a support case.
I would really love a feature that would allow you to add a layer to an already existing group, without first ungrouping and regrouping. If I ungroup it destroys the previously assigned triggers and motion paths. Thanks!
Thank you for reaching out! I've created a feature request for the ability to add layers to an existing group. We will be sure to update you with any news should this make it onto our feature roadmap.
I want to add a shape, icon, image etc to an existing group without losing animations that are applied to that group.
This worked for me.
Ctrl+C (copy) the shape or icon I want to add to the group, then select an object in the group (any object) this opens the group and then I Ctrl+V (paste) the shape or icon and it appears in the group, keeping all the existing animations.

Hi Activica,
No changes to this set up - did you look at using the Shift or CTRL key to keep all the items selected while adding to it?

Hi Jay,
That's a neat idea to set this up - and not one I'd heard yet. Our product team loves hearing new ideas--share yours with us right here. 😁

Did this ever get resolved?
Hi Kevan,
This is still an open feature request with our team and this conversation is attached so that we can share updates with you here.
I wanted to share some information about how we manage these feature requests as that may be helpful.

No news on this one? This has been 4 years in the making and a very crucial feature.

Thanks Lauren, this is really helpful. Half-way there! Now just need to be able to move layers into a group too.

Hi PJ and Kevin,
Thank you for reaching out! I've created a feature request for the ability to add layers to an existing group. We will be sure to update you with any news should this make it onto our feature roadmap.
We appreciate your feedback!

Hi Everyone,
Possible solution!
Hope it works for you!
I tried this and it worked! All I had left to do is rename the layers. Thanks!
