Align to a locked object

This is something I've been wondering about for a while but have never been able to figure out... is it possible to align two (or more) objects when one of them is locked in place? For instance, say I have 3 objects and I would like them to all be top-aligned, and one is at the height I want but the other two aren't. Storyline seems to default to lining them all up with the highest one. Is there any way to specify that, for instance, I want the middle one to stay where it is and the others to align to it?

Hi Adrienne,
I may not be understanding your example, but if the two items you're trying to align to the middle item are not already on the same level of alignment you can only bring one up to the alignment of your middle item. I recorded a quick Peek video of what I think you're trying to do, and you can see it here.
Sorry, I should have been more clear. I'm talking about using the Align option on the taskbar. I can click three objects and then click "Align top" and their tops will all align with the top of the highest object. But I can't choose for the three objects to be aligned with an object that is not the highest.
Manually move the other two lower than the desired height, then align to top.
Correct Adrienne - the highest item will be considered the top, so you'd need to do something manual such as Walt's suggestion.
Thanks for your responses... I think I made a mistake using top-alignment as my example, because I'm realizing now that that's not where I usually have problems. Let's talk about center alignment. It seems like when you're trying to align objects to be centered with each other, sometimes they both move and other times one object just moves to the center of the other. What is the "rule" for that? I would like to be able to predict which center my object will go to.
Hi Adrienne
I hear you and have often wondered that myself. Here is something about PPT alignment which I suspect may be the same rule that SL uses (staff can correct this if wrong)
For Align Center, the objects are aligned to a computed line (the “center of gravity” of the group) as shown here:
Hi Adrienne,
Looks like Wendy's picture is spot on - it'll be the center point for those objects and their slide position will depend on where they started and "how far" they had to go to match up to that center point. I did another quick Peek video of that here.
Thanks! The picture and the video are both very helpful!
