"Automatically Decide" == "Random" ?

I have a kind of basic functionality question, if anyone can clarify it for me...
I had eight images, each triggering a different layer, with each layer playing a simple animation. After setting them up, I found that four of the layers re-play the animation when re-visited, and four of them do not. The "when re-visiting" property on all the layers was set to "automatically decide."
I changed them all to "initial state," so that takes care of that. But I'm curious about what influences "automatically decide." I can't find anything different about the layers that would make them "decide" in different ways.

Hey Ken, Michael's link clearly out lines the Automatically Decide (AD) logic, In addition I think they're a variety of SL skill levels out there and SL makes the default AD revisiting state "simple" and it works with rapid course design.
