Can't jump to URL when button clicked
Jun 06, 2014
There is a button in my project that I want to use to launch a demonstration outside of Storyline. I created a trigger for the button that jumps to the URL when the button is clicked, but when I click the green Check URL/File icon to check the URL, Storyline says it isn't valid. When I publish and test the project, sure enough I get a File Not Found error when I click the button.
The URL, however, is definitely valid. When I access it outside of Storyline it works just fine. Why might this be happening?
If it makes any difference, the URL starts with https instead of http.
Thanks!

Hi Jennifer,
First, can you tell me how you're viewing the published presentation, please? Are you viewing the published output files locally, or are you uploading to a web server or LMS?
If you're viewing your published files locally, this may be the problem. If you view a published Storyline presentation on your local hard drive or send it to someone else to view on their local hard drive, you'll encounter security restrictions from the computer, web browser, Flash Player, and network that'll cause various features of your content to fail.
To properly test your published content and share it with others, upload it to the environment for which it was published. Please review the article below for more information:
Publishing and Sharing Articulate Storyline Content
If that doesn't help, it might be the type of URL. For example, here's an article on web objects. While I realize you're not using a web object in your project, the information regarding HTTPS may be helpful.
If you're still having trouble, please try sharing the URL or the .story file for your project.
Best,
Christine
Jennifer,
Is the URL you're trying to access within a firewall and you're outside of that while previewing?
Thanks!
Christine: I've uploaded the published files to a web server and am viewing them there.
Kevin: The URL is behind a firewall, but I'm inside of the firewall while viewing the published project.
The .story file is 41 MB. Is that too large to attach to a post here, and if so, is there another way to share it?

Hi Jennifer,
It might be difficult for us to test the link, if that's the case. However, it wouldn't hurt to take a look at it and see if we can spot what might be causing the trouble.
Also, yes - I believe the max for a file attachment here is 20MB. One option would be to simply pull the slide that contains the hyperlink into a new .story file. Here's how.
If you have any trouble with that, please let me know.
Best,
Christine
Thanks! I've attached a .story file with just the problem slide in it. Now that I think about it, the link may well be accessible to you after all.

Hi Jennifer,
I didn't make it very far before I noticed that the URL you have also contains - these are usually used in HTML, but won't work with a URL in Storyline.
I removed the brackets and used the test link option in Storyline - the page opens just fine now :)
Here's the published version:
Testing URL for Jennifer
I'm also attaching the modified version of the file you shared, just in case you want to take a look.
Let me know if you have any trouble with this, or if you don't see the same behavior on your end.
Thanks!
Christine
Heh...well that was easily resolved!
Storyline actually added the brackets when I entered the link, so I assumed it needed them. All is well without them.
Thanks much!
You're very welcome, Jennifer :D
Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance.
Have a great day,
Christine
