Character exported as .emf file shows up rastorized.

Nov 08, 2022

We recently exported a character from SL to both .emf and .wmf and the exported character is rendered as a bitmap instead of a vector file.

Is this a new program error/issue?

Hi Bob,

Thanks for reaching out! I tried to export an illustrated character, and as expected, the resulting file was an EMF vector image. Here are the steps I followed:

  1. Right-click the character on the slide.
  2. Scroll to Export Pose and choose Export Original Pose.

May I know if you tried to export a photographic or an illustrated character?

If it was an illustrated character, I'm happy to help troubleshoot. We can start by checking if you're working on your local drive; working on a network drive can cause erratic behavior. If the problem still happens, try running these steps to repair Storyline.

Let me know how it goes!

Hi Eric, I just tried doing it again and additionally followed your steps. Same result. Bringing the character into Illustrator to check the format. File appears to be a bitmap.

Tried illustrated character "Jayla", exported both network and local. Same results. Going to check out repair option next.

Shocked but not totally surprised to get a response from the support staff looking into this issue telling me that they don't have the necessary tools to properly test/diagnose the error we were getting. I sent in several screen shots in a PDF file to the support person. Also attached the file here as well.

What the hell?

"Hi Bob,

Thanks for your response.

As I don't have Adobe Illustrator that I can use to test, could you also attach a screenshot from Illustrator showing that it is seeing a bitmap from the EMF or WMF images from Storyline?"

Update for everyone else out there attempting to export characters.

I just got this note back from the support team and, I did ask that they file a new feature request to get it back. Kind of odd that it already was a feature. I refrained from cursing.

"Hi Bob,

Just wanted to touch base with you as I did get an answer from our engineering team.

They did confirm that it used to export a vector image, but a change was introduced when we updated our internal character rendering engine to better handle some new illustrated characters.

They don't have any announced plans to change it back at this time, but I am happy to file a feature request on your behalf."
