Content Library copyright and handing over .story files

Sep 02, 2020

Hi all

I have a scenario where I'd like to use images in the Content Library to develop an eLearning course. I am doing this on behalf of a client, whereby the contract states that it all remains the IP of the client. At the end of the contract, part of it involves handing over the source files (i.e. .story files) as well as the SCORM packages.

Now while I am clear on being able to use the Content Library in the course I am developing for the client, what happens when I hand over the .story files?

Given that .story files can only be used by another Articulate user, can it be assumed that any other provider that takes on the work for any updates or re-development will have access to the usage rights?

This seems like it would be a fairly common issue but I can't find an exact answer to the part of it where the .story files are handed over to a client for use by a different provider.

Regards

Malcolm

Hi Malcolm!

Great question!

You may edit and use Content Library 360 assets any way you like in the courses you build with Articulate 360 apps, such as Storyline 360. However, you can't use assets outside of Articulate 360 apps. For example, their use is prohibited in product brochures or websites. See section 2.11 in our terms of service.

Sharing the final product would give the recipient full usage rights of the Storyline 360 course unless it's stated differently in your contract. For the recipient to edit the course, they would need access to Storyline 360, which includes access to the Content Library.

Hi Jazmine,

Yes, you definitely can!

The sample courses included in Rise 360 fall under "2.11. Content Files." of our terms of service, as mentioned by my colleague. For your reference, you can find the relevant section below:

"You may use the Content Files to develop your e-learning end product in our Services (“End Product”), including modifying and embedding the Content Files into your End Product, and reproducing and distributing the Content Files if integrated in your End Product."

In your case, using the Rise 360 templates would fall under modifying content files for distribution.

Hope this helps!
