When inserting a shape (doesn't matter which), I select my shape from the shape dropdown toolbar, then click the stage. A shape appears as expected.
However, I want to click/drag open a shape to adhere to my requirements. I do not want to have the shape be created, then have to click again to reshape it.

Is this a SL default behavior? Yes.
If you go to Arrange > Align>Grid Settings, and choose Snap objects to grid AND Snap objects to other objects, it sometimes helps.
