Update 12/18/18: Review and Retry Incorrect Questions Only

Oct 23, 2018

Hi everyone!

I've seen a few requests in the E-Learning Heroes Community for a quiz demo that will allow learners to review or retry only the incorrectly answered quiz questions.

UPDATE (12/18/18):  Storyline 360 now has a feature that makes it easy to allow learners to review and retry only incorrect questions with just a few clicks! You can read more about how this new feature works in this article and see it in action here

If you're using another version of Storyline, follow the tutorial below!

Using Louise's tutorial as a jumping off point, I created a 5-question quiz file with the variables and triggers needed for reviewing and retrying only the incorrectly answered questions.

Curious to know how I built this demo? Check out these 2-minute tutorial videos:

Part I - Review Incorrect Questions Only

Part II - Retry Incorrect Questions Only

You can also test this file in action here!

As always, give me a shout if you have any questions about how to implement this setup in your own project.

The attached file can be opened in Storyline 3.

Thank you, this article is timely.  I need to build our certification exam with the "skip correct answers on retry" behavior (don't need the review option).

Instead of using the 'number' variable type for the system to know if the question was answered correctly, I used the T/F variable.  The proposition is binary and it makes reading the triggers panel a little more intuitive (Is_Q1_correct = True).

For multiple response questions, it looks like a separate trigger must be created to change the state of each correct option.  That means about 300 manually created triggers, so I'm wondering if conditions can be used to make it one trigger.

Hi Max,

I saw the same thing with Multiple Response questions. From what I can see, it looks like you'll have to create a separate trigger for each answer choice. Not a fun task when you have several questions to contend with!

Our team is looking at how we can make this process much easier by building the functionality directly into Storyline. That means you won't need any triggers and variables at all! If we add this new feature to Storyline in the future, we'll let you know.

will this work with storyline 3? I have taken a look and replicated the triggers on my course. the only difference is that the show layer success and failure on the results slide are 'slide triggers' rather than 'player triggers' and are therefore earlier in the trigger list. Would this cause an issue? I cant get it working and this is the only real difference

I wanted to pop back into this discussion to announce that we just released a new feature in Storyline 360 that you're gonna love. 💙

Now it's easy to allow learners to review and retry only incorrect questions with just a few clicks! You can read more about how this new feature works in this article that's hot off the press.

And don't miss an example of this new feature in action!

Here’s how you can update Storyline 360 to check out this new feature. Let me know if you have more questions about it!

I have a questions, which I think is in the same ball park as this feed - I have a set of questions throughout a course, used to tailor the learning the learn has to do - if they get the question right they can skip that section.

At the end of the course is a post course assessment which has the same questions again in one go for those people who got it wrong the first time - they can reinforce by answering them again later.

However, what I want to do is to be able to skip the post course questions if the learner has got them right all the way through the other modules. I have it working for multiple choice questions, but I cant get it working for a drag and drop free form question - even with the triggering the state of the objects to be 'drop correct'...

Any ideas?

Thank you so much Alyssa. I've followed your instructions in SL3 and it's working perfectly. The only issue I have is when using Retry. There is a momentary flash of the 'correct' slides as SL goes through each question looking for incorrect ones. Is there anyway of getting the search to happen in the background?

Lauren Connelly

Hi Kim!

Great question! I recreated a similar file on my end and noticed the momentary flash after clicking "Retry Quiz".

After researching similar snags, it looks like our team has logged this issue as a bug where the first slide briefly flashes after clicking Retry Quiz. I've added your comments to the report so that we can notify you when we have a fix!

Tyler Sloan

Hey, Lauren. I'd like to up the momentary flash fix request.

I'm considering adding variable triggers to each question to have the "retry" button jump to the first incorrect question, but that's a lot over a long quiz. Is there something else I should be using other than jumping to the first slide in the quiz scene?

Thanks for your time!
