How to build a large course in Storyline

Sep 03, 2014

I am tasked with converting a 40 hour classroom training into an eLearning course. I am working on creating a layout in Storyline that will facilitate this task.

There are three phases, in  Phase 1 there are 9 Modules each module has a number of lessons. Each lesson will have audio, some video, animations, quizzes, knowledge checks etc. The learner has to complete module 1 before moving on to module 2.

I created all the scenes (9 separate scenes) in SL, I have not added any text, graphics, etc yet. It's a bare bones layout. Already, it takes forever to load, save, and preview the layout!

I am afraid to continue with this layout as it already seems to be overburdened in SL. Has anyone run into this problem when trying to build large courses? If so, what have you done to fix this problem.

SL is great for creating small courses, am wondering if it's just not a great tool when creating large courses?

FYI - they will be loaded to an LMS and quizzes will be tracked.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

To Phil's point, you probably should have one file as module 1, another as module 2, and another as module 3.

I regularly create one file for a 24 hour course and that tends to be a bit heavy, but many of the activities are linked pdfs within the file.

I don't know what type of LMS you're using, but my LMS would probably require you to  have one file per tracked quiz, so if you're planning to track formative assessments you've implemented in the middle of your sections, that my create yet another problem. Then again, it could be the difference between Pass/Incomplete and other types of completions.

Just some thoughts.
