iPad crashing when running a quiz from an lms

Apr 21, 2014

I have a portal that we designed and it is attached to an lms.  When the user launches the quiz from their desktop computer it runs, tracks, and shows the progress in the portal.  When I use the same user and then launch the quiz from an ipad the browser crashes.  However, if I use a new user, one that has not opened the quiz from a desktop, the quiz runs and tracks fine from the iPad.  It is a simple quiz of 10 questions, published in SCORM 1.2 format.  Should be no issues.

Has anyone come across anything like this?  It seems to crash the browser right when it launches, it does not even show the HTML launch splash screen. I have it set to automatically resume where the user left off.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Randy,

Have you tested this as well from SCORM Cloud, an industry standard testing method for SCORM content, to help narrow down if it also occurs outside of your LMS? If you'd like to share the .story file here with us we're also happy to test. Please let us know what iPad version and iOS you're using as well, and confirm that you're viewing it within Mobile Safari.

Ashley,

I have tested it on SCORM Cloud and although it does not crash the iPad mobile browser, it does give an error.  When I launch it through SCORM Cloud after having taken it with the same user on a desktop, it does not resume where it was left on the pc, (the results slide) but starts from the beginning like you are going to take it again, but when you get to the first question, the answer is already checked but the submit button is active.  I can go through and the answers are selected as I did on the desktop until it gets to Question 4.  There it has a different answer selected form what I selected and even though I hit submit it hangs up there.  I have tried this with 2 separate courses I created.  The second has many different answers from what I selected but it makes it to question 7 before it hangs.

Seems like it is not bookmarking correctly and is remembering answers incorrectly.  Thoughts?

I am using an iPad 4, with iOS 7.1.1 as well as the built in safari mobil browser.

I tried one more thing, I built a new quiz, exported as Scorm 1.2 and posted it to SCORM Cloud. I launched it from the iPad and went through it just fine.  When I relaunched it again from the iPad, it took me to the results slide as it should, however, now my score was 0.  It did not remember my score and when I hit review it had all the answers marked as incorrect even though you could clearly see on the screen that the right answer was checked.

Hi Randy,

Thanks for doing the additional testing and sharing the update here. For the second, new quiz you built - I'm curious if you checked the slides revisiting properties to ensure it's not set to "reset to initial state" - if so, it would reset the score when you're revisiting it and cause your previous answers to be marked incorrect on the review.

The explanation of your first test behavior also reminded me of a known issue right now where you may find that a course doesn't resume when the following conditions are true:

*  The course was published with Articulate Storyline Update 5.
*  The course is being tracked by a quiz result slide.
*  You're viewing the course in mobile Safari on an iPad.
This is a known issue. It'll be fixed in the next software update for Storyline. In the meantime, you may revert back to Update 4, which can be downloaded here.   (You'll want to uninstall your current version of Storyline, install Update 4 (above), reboot your computer, then republish your course.)
Also, it's worth noting that the course may not resume as expected after meeting the completion requirement as the course may be considered in review mode as described here.

Thanks Ashley, I will take a look at reverting back to update 4.  It may cause other issues with the tin can Modules we are exporting though.  In the mean time, here are the 2 story files. https://swiftsmartsolutions.sharefile.com/d/s7a1966ed3214a7c8

The Mod1EMA is the original file I built that has custom buttons for next and submitting.  I would prefer to use this version as it looks nicer.  The second file Mod1EMA test is the second course I built and took out the custom buttons.  If you could take a look and let me know if you see anything out of sorts I would appreciate it.

When is the next update for Storyline due out? All of those statements held true, I am on update 5, it is being tracked by a results slide, and the issues are on mobile safari.

Hi Randy,

Thanks for sharing the information here, and I see the behavior you described and as I mentioned it is a known issue. I don't have a time frame to offer in regards to the next update for Storyline, but we'll post an update here in the forums to let everyone know and you could also enable Storyline to check for updates at startup (as long as you're connected to the internet).

For the second course, I launched that one in SCORM Cloud, and it worked as expected for me. Can you check out the version linked and let me know how it behaves for you?  I did change your slide properties to "resume saved state" instead of "automatically decide" as I had mentioned - could cause your quiz slides to be set as incorrect on a revisit even though you answered them correctly.

Ok, so it helped but still not quite there.  I changed all of Module 1 EMA with my custom buttons to resume saved state , and it is closer, just not remembering the score, you can review the quiz and it has all of them but one marked and when i reach the results slide again it has a 90%.  Also, I made the change you said you made to the EMA test file, and it did not review as it should have.  When I went to review it had every question marked wrong and no score, so I am very confused. I guess this is the known issue.  Unfortunately, I have a deadline here in a few weeks to have 12 of theses Assessments done.  So I have to figure out what I need to do and if I have to go to another product to get this done.

Hi Randy,

Yes, the retry quiz functionality would reset all the elements so that the user could take the course again. When I reviewed the course I placed on SCORM cloud, it showed me the correct/incorrect banner as expected (although it still had the odd resume behavior). Were you able to test out my version on SCORM Cloud?
