layer not appearing
Mar 27, 2013
I have a Quick Reference Job Aid that has many layers and hotspots. I want the character and caption to display when the user first opens the job aid. Then I want them to not popup again. If I add them to the base layer and then hide them on all other layers, it works fine until I click outside a hotspot. Then they pop up again. If I add a layer specifically for them, they don't show up. I set the trigger to Show Layer - When the timeline starts and Hide layer - When the user clicks outside the character and the caption. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Hi Pamela, you are going to need a true false variable for this.
Create a variable - call it showOnce - and set the initial value to false.
Put your character and text on the main slide and add a slide trigger to the main page that changes the state of the character to hidden if the variable showOnce is equal to true. Add another one set up the same way to set the text to hidden.
then add a trigger to each of your layers to adjust the variable onShow to true when the timeline starts.
This should do the trick. There might be a cleaner way but I am just doing this off the top of my head right now.
Hi Nancy
I tired this but the character and caption still reappear when I click outside a hotspot. I could send you the file if that would help.
Thanks
Pam
Hi Pam
You could try adding additional triggers to all your hotspots that changes the state of the character and caption to Hidden, so whichever one is clicked first they disappear and won't reappear unless the slide is reloaded from the start.
Hope this helps

Hi Pam, sure send me the file and I will take a look.
@Helen- you can't add this type of trigger to hotspots - If you want to try this approach you would have to use shapes instead of hotspots.
You can add Change of State triggers to hotspots, but the object and hotspot need to be on the same layer (or base). Admittedly having not seen the source file I'm presuming there is some clickable hotspot/button on the base to launch into the layers rather than it being on the timeline so the user has some control over what they see when.

HI Nancy
How do I upload the file? Please let me know what you think - and thanks for your help!
Pam
Hi Pam, you can try zipping the story file and uploading using the paperclip icon on this post. If you don't want the file to be accessible to everyone then you could try sending it to me directly. Most people use dropbox around here but it you don't have it you could either email it to me at nancy.woinoski@pinchedhead.com or use a file transfer service such as we transfer if you think the file is too large for email.

Hi Helen, you are right - you can add triggers to hotspots that change the states of objects I thought you were suggesting changing the states of the hotspots which can't be done.
