Mac User trying to install Storyline

Dec 17, 2020

Hello,

I would like to install storyline on a Mac. I know I will need to get windows running on my mac.

Do I get windows or windows for mac considering I will use Apple Bootcamp? Which version is the best? Should I get home or pro? Also, what is a good resource for getting me through this.

I tried this when using the trial but couldn't get it to work. I had a deadline for a masters course so, had to walk away. wasted my 60 day free trial. I had office 365 from my university account and it wasn't playing nice with bootcamp and an older version of office.

Hi Burnie and welcome to E-Learning Heroes 😊

Mac users can install Storyline 360, Studio 360, and Replay 360 in Parallels DesktopVMware Fusion, or Apple Boot Camp.

See these best practices for using Articulate software in a virtual environment:

No worries, Burnie. You should be able to use the software via Bootcamp as well, and I shared the link above. Bootcamp allows you to 'boot up' your system using either Mac or Windows, so I apologize for any confusion. To answer your original question, you will need Windows to run this environment. I'm not sure what "Windows for Mac" is. This article may be more helpful.

You do need Office to do some features within Storyline, such as importing content or publishing to Word.

You can see all of our system requirements for Storyline 360 here.

You will need it to use Studio 360. Here is an overview for all of Articulate 360:

Combined System Requirements for All Articulate 360 Apps

Be sure to install Office on the Windows side along with your Articulate software and if using 365, install the desktop apps because the online version is not compatible.

Hi Jennifer and welcome to E-Learning Heroes. 😊

Thanks for reaching out and sharing what you are running into. A quick search shows me that the M1 chip computers not allowing the use of Windows is a big conversation right now.

You will need a Windows environment to use the software as you can see in our documentation here.

It looks like Parallels is running a preview program, so it sounds like they are working on it.

Hi Leslie, I'm an Articulate customer with a Mac. I've read this and other forums about Articulate's decision not to have a roadmap for developing a native Mac version due to "the vast majority of users being in Windows."

I'd be curious to hear from your company what the % breakdown is between Windows and Mac users. The "vast majority" feels like a too-easy generalization. And if it doesn't seem like you hear enough from Mac users to justify developing a native version, have you considered the number of folks not even asking for it after reading your FAQs? Or people who simply don't sign up that otherwise would?

As for me, my company has to license Parallels for the sole purpose of running Articulate360. The licensing costs, extra IT labor, and workflow friction is all being pushed onto me as a Mac user.

Anyway, as someone who's company spends thousands of dollars on your software each year I want to be a squeaky wheel and say it's inconsiderate to your user base to push the challenges back onto us. Of course I have the option of changing what OS I use, or not using Storyline, but neither of those options work for me so alas I'll keep absorbing the cost until your company can make a pivot. Even if it wouldn't be a boon to your bottom line, the loyalty and positive experience for this segment of you users should hopefully be reason enough to at least start dreaming of a way to accomplish it long term.

Hello Danny,

Many of us here at Articulate, including myself, are Mac users, so I understand the desire for a native Mac version of Storyline. We didn’t make the decision not to pursue a native Mac version of Storyline lightly. We know that it’s not the decision some folx want; however, we do believe it has and will continue to allow us to invest in the products and features that provide the most value to the majority of customers.

I appreciate you reaching out and sharing your perspective, and I will be glad to share your feedback with our team internally.
