Mobile landscape to portrait formatting

Feb 15, 2023

I'm just starting to play around with creating a mobile friendly Storyline project.

My current project is 16:9 at 960 wide and 540 high. This previews ok in landscape, but I've got back space top and bottom when I rotate to portrait.

I'm missing something. If Storyline is responsive, why is it not making a better job displaying in portrait?

Hi Neil,

Thanks for reaching out!

I'm assuming you are referring to the black spaces found at the top and bottom of the screen when a course is viewed in portrait mode.

The behavior you are experiencing is intended, and the reason for this is that Storyline 360's player does not alter the story size of a course even when the orientation of the device being used to view a course is changed. This allows the course to be delivered to learners the way authors designed them.

You can check out more information about Storyline 360's Responsive Mobile Player here:

To add on to what Joe shared, Storyline is slide-based authoring with a fixed aspect ratio (like a video). The modern player is responsive but the content is fixed and scales to the device (again, like a video).

Depending on what you're building, if you want a more responsive course, then Rise may be the better option and you can add custom interactions as single slide from Storyline (if you need something custom).

Hi, I have a similar issue when viewing on iPhone (both in Safafy and Chrome).: My current project is 16:9. Responsive playback is set up as Landscape and Portrait.
The content is mostly videos the same size as the slide. when rotating back to portrait after landscape, the video gets cut and won't resize. It works always well in Landscape, but not portrait.
Is there a fix for this?

Thanks!

Hi Makers of Media,

Great question! I understand that your video is being cut off when rotating back to portrait mode after viewing in landscape mode. I’m happy to work with you to figure out why this is happening! I have a few follow-up questions regarding the situation so I can understand what you are experiencing a little better.

  • Which version of Storyline are you using?
  • Is this happening with more than one course or is this the only one?
  • How are you publishing your course?

Thanks for reaching out and I look forward to your response!

Thanks, Jhon!

That is correct.
-  Storyline 360 v3. 68.28887.0
- We only have that one course currently on Storyline.
-  We are publishing in Articulate Review and as a SCORM file for the client's website.  ( this happens with both versions)

We have found out this happens for some versions of iPhone like 8 and 13, but not on Android mobiles.

Thanks.
