Please Help! Somewhat complicated!

Hello, all..
Here's the breakdown.
I'm building a course that allows the learner to choose their own avatar.
There is a scenario based interactive in the course with characters.
Now, how do I generate the avatar they chose to be in that scenario?
I'm just not even sure where to begin or if a feature like this is even possible. Is it a variables thing? I'm almost sure it can't be a trigger, but I may be wrong
Please help! I would be so heartbroken if I can't run with this idea.

See attached a quick example for how this might work. On the first slide, when you select any of the three characters, a variable is set to 1, 2 or 3. Then on the Masterslide is an object with three custom states that show each character, based on the value of the variable. Since this object sits on the master slide the same selected avatar is shown on all slides. Hope that helps.
Michael, this is brilliant! This is EXACTLY what I was looking. Thank you so much for taking the time to create that example.
If you have a moment, would you be able to show me how to create such variables? I can try and mimic what you've created, but I wouldn't really be understanding it. I'm quite new to Storyline and I would love to learn more.
Thank you so much for replying and saving the day!
Hi Rica,
You may want to begin by reviewing the tutorials here on how to work with variables.
