Presentation size on iPad and iPhone

Jun 19, 2012

I've been playing around a bit with Storyline, and it's going quite well! My only issue (for now) is that the size of my presentations gets screwed up on iPad and iPhone.

I'm setting up my courses as small activities on larger pages, so I'd like to have them contained within iframes. I set my story size to fit within the iframe, and on a desktop it works great. However, when I look at iPad/iPhone, the presentation displays larger than my iframe so that it becomes cut off and impossible to navigate. It looks like my presentations are getting resized to the maximum possible for the devices. How can I set a defined width/height that mobile viewing respects?

Hi Ian,

First, unfortunately Android is not currently a supported mobile device. We are still taking requests for this and there has been some discussion on supporting this device. However, the current supported mobile device is the iPad.

Having said all of that, it may also be worth mentioning that the browser size settings are not supported in Mobile.

Hopefully some of the community members that have been able to successfully run their courses on the Android can give you a little feedback or suggestions on zooming in through that device.

Let us know if you're able to find something that works for you.

Thanks!

Has this been resolved? I upgraded to Studio 13 and a big part of that decision was the ability to publish courses in HTML5 and have them play on iPads. I'm having the same issue as others here. The course is cut off on the right side. Using tin can and Articulate Hosting is not an option. Has anyone got a solution? If not, Articulate can we get this fixed?

Hi Randy, Douglas and Suzanne,

We've heard a few reports of this based on LMS's who display content within an iframe.  It's been reported to our QA team, but since there are a number of LMS's available and they all have their own player set up I don't have a time frame to offer in regards to a fix. You'll see back in August Dan reported that Moodle was having an issue displaying SCORM Content and they were hoping to fix it in version 2.6 - so with that in mind you may also want to check in with your LMS team regarding how they're displaying the content and if it is in an iframe, is there a way to change that within the LMS.

I mirror Suzanne's frustration.

I have a product that has been launched in Moodle that has multiple storyline interactions embedded in web pages via iframe that customers are now complaining are cut off and look wonky in their ipads with iOS 7.

I have ver 2.6 of Moodel and update 5 of Storyline and I simply cannot get the HTML content to fit on the screen in the ipad.  there is a big white space on the left and the content is cut off on the right.

anyone have a solution?

I would like to comment on this thread as well. I am having the same cut off problem that everyone is reporting. You can resize the iframe to your hearts content in html or css but once the html5 content loads it trumps the sizing and fills the screen therefore cutting off the content (bottom and right are cut off). I have tried all possible combinations in the publish settings but according the supported features it doesn't apply in HTML 5. I have even modifed the player css file but didn't have any luck. I will try looking at the javascript file next but that seems like a larger undertaking. Loading the HTML5 content works fine by itself if you are not tracking behind an LMS (when you just load presentation_html5). Most people, if not all, that have their own LMS and are using a SCORM wrapper have to have an iframe/frame implementation to talk back to their LMS. Obviously using Tin can could solve this but this wouldn't be feasible for 95%+ of the people on these forums. So far I am considerably disappointed in how Articulate has implemented their HTML 5 portion of their product. We bought several licenses (I think we have 7) on the understanding that HTML 5 would work in an LMS. So far that has not even come close to happening. Sure the content tracks now but what good is it if the student can not see the proper buttons or content to proceed in the training. I will monitor these forums and hope there is a fix for either storyline or AP13 that will honor the parent CSS and sizing settings in HTML 5. In the meantime I will need to look for another solution to provide HTML 5 training in our LMS.

Hi Justin,

This issue is with our QA team and I don't have any updates to share at the moment. Since each LMS is different though, it's worth seeing if there is a way to force it out of the iFrame instead of just editing the frame code. Once we have additional information to share we'll try to post back in threads such as this one.

Hi Guys,

This fixed things for me in on fell swoop on the iPad when launching a SCORM object from Moodle 2.6 (Note this is for opening in a new window):

http://community.articulate.com/forums/t/46717.aspx

Download the zip in this thread. In Moodle make sure you backup or take copies of this folder: [yourmoodlesite]/public_html/mod/scorm

FTP the contents of the zip to the scorm folder on Moodle.

In Moodle edit settings of the SCORM object under Appearance, Show more, choose the newly created "[[popup_simple]]" from the dropdown menu.

StoryLine Player settings I found were good for this were: Browser size: "Display at user's current size", Player size: "Scale player to fill browser window" - However I think the Player size setting could be locked to optimal if you wish.

Cheers,

Stephen

I've seen a few say they have no issues with Moodle and Storyline for desktop;however, as with iPad, I can't find the optimal settings for Storyline in combination with Moodle. Navigation buttons always seem to be cut off in one way or the other.

I've tried various combinations and would appreciate any input to shorten this tedious and costly process.

Does anyone have optimal settings for Storyline dimensions in combination with Moodle so the package launches without scroll bars or buttons being cut off?

Learners - at least for the first release - will be directed to using IE and no mobile devices.

Thanks. I've also looked on the Moodle site without satisfaction.

Hi Linda,

There is a current issue we're aware of where content is truncated or cut off when being displayed in an iFrame. This is most noticeable on the ipad and is dependent on the LMS player being used. I've heard vary reports from users here about different versions of Moodle having different behavior, so you may want to look a bit further into what version you're using and if there is any documentation within the Moodle tracker - and other threads here in the community.

Hi Ashley,

I appreciate your responding although it doesn't give me much to go on. I have indeed tried and read the threads in the community and your link. (Hours of research.) Obviously, I haven't found an answer. I know the Moodle version is version 2.3.2+(Build: 20120927).

Unfortunately, the Moodle support team for the client does not have Articulate experience nor are they very supportive of our attempts to introduce Articulate. This is an uphill battle and so far not much support in the way of answers.

Thanks anyway.

Hi Linda,

Sorry that I don't have additional information to share at this time - it is something that our QA team is looking into, but as every LMS player is different it's also something worth investigating with the LMS team. The Moodle versions I've heard that are displaying better within the iPad are newer versions such as 2.6 or 2.7 - and based on another thread I see that you've started here I see that you've also mentioned the Flash content isn't working as expected either though? I'm curious if you've also tested the Flash version by loading it into SCORM Cloud which is an industry standard for testing SCORM content, to see how it behaves there. You could also use this version to see how the content would display on your iPad outside of an iFrame.

Hi Randy,

This thread is referring to an issue within Storyline, which our team has been investigating, and it looks like a fix made it into update 6 of Storyline as mentioned here in the release notes:

  • Fixed issue where HTML5 content displayed in an iFrame wouldn't size correctly in mobile Safari

Since the issue is dependent on the LMS player, it's also worth checking in with your LMS team to see if there is a way to force it out of the iFrame. Also, we've also recently released Studio '13 update 3 detailed here.

You may want to look within the specific Studio forum to see if anyone had additional information to share in regards to how this is working for them in Studio vs. Storyline.

Justin Waskovich

does the studio '13 update include the same iframe fix listed in storyline ? I am about to test this all again today and wanted to know if it was worth my time before i tested it again. I will be testing to see if the iframe is positioned and tracking properly in Presenter '13. This is the fix I am hoping that was addressed from what I posted in June.

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Hi Justin,

There was a fix included in Studio '13, but again it's important to note that it's really dependent on your LMS and how it'll launch the content, which is why the documentation is written as such. As a good base line for how it should behave, you may want to try testing your course at SCORM Cloud which is an industry standard for testing SCORM Content.
