Screencast and Slide Master : issue

May 06, 2024

I need to create a curriculum on new computer programs and the “record screen” function is absolutely fantastic. I've just recorded a 15-minute sequence which generated 60 slides. I recorded in 16:9 with a resolution of 1600x900 with the idea of enlarging to 1920x1080 afterwards, which leaves me with a 180 pixel footer to add navigation via the slide master. I consulted the forums and unfortunately I didn't see a solution to get around the screencast layer, which is always on top. Do you have a solution to suggest?

Hi Fabrice,

Happy to help!

Can I ask if you are seeing your objects placed behind the screen recording in your slides? If so, you'll want to make sure that you have the objects placed on top of your screen recordings in the timeline, similar to how the shape is placed here:

When a screen recording slide is previewed with objects on top of it, the objects will be visible on top of the recording:

Is this the behavior you were previously experiencing? If it is not, please make a Peek 360 recording of it so we can take a look at what's happening.

Hi José,

Thanks for your reply. What I would like to have is a navigation at the bottom of all my screencasts. I was able to do it using your method, but when you have more than 100 slides for training, you have to copy-paste each slide. And if you need to change something in your navigation, you have to start all over again. That's why I thought of setting the navigation at slide master level. I've attached a short demo to my comment and you'll see that the slide master doesn't work for screencasts. I tried playing with the screen resolution but even with a white border around the screencast, the slide master doesn't appear....Is this normal? or am I making a mistake? Thanks for your feedback. Fabrice

Hi Fabrice!

Glad to see my teammate Joe has been helping you! Happy to jump in here!

What you are experiencing is expected behavior. Slides generated from screen recordings have their own custom backgrounds since these slides are automatically generated using frames from the screen recordings. The backgrounds of step-by-step slides override any inherited design from Slide Masters.

Although tedious, manually adding your navigation buttons by copying and pasting them from the Slide Master layout directly to your slides is the best approach for this type of design.

Please let me know if you have any more questions!

Dear Steven,

Thank you for your feedback. It's just as I imagined. I've placed the navigation on each slide. It works perfectly but when you have more than 50 slides per scene and you have to make a modification it becomes a very tedious task. I tried capturing the screens in a lower resolution and then having a larger slide size setup but you're right step-by-step backgrounds slides override any inherited design from Slide Masters even if you've modified the resolution.

Perhaps an important improvement to consider for the next major release. Again, thanks for your help.
